Shirley M. (Bruise) McGirr, age 89, of York, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of the late Bruce L. Jackson and Jack W. McGirr, III.
Shirley was born in Rushford, NY on December 19, 1935 and was the daughter of the late Max and Dorothy (Ballard) Bruise. She worked for Bells Market in Leroy, NY and enjoyed gardening, crafts, painting, and working with silk flowers. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and York Christian Fellowship. Above all, Shirley cherished conversations and time spent with her loving family and grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her children Karen Leaton and husband John, Dennis Jackson, Mark Jackson and wife Diana, and Susan Downs and husband Brenton; her stepchildren Jack McGirr IV, and Vickie Anderson. She has 21 grandchildren; including Olivia and Harrison Downs who she lived with for the last 15 years and shared a special bond; 28 great-grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother David Bruise; numerous nieces and nephews; and her cherished dog, Annie. Shirley was preceded in death by her grandsons Bruce L. Jackson, Jeremiah Jackson, and Scott Anderson; her granddaughter Barbie Anderson; and her siblings Howard Bruise, Ruth Kendall, and Audrey Henry.
Her Celebration of Life will be held at York Christian Fellowship on Saturday, March 8th at 3:00 PM. It is open to the public and the family encourages women to wear glittery clothes.
Professional services are under the direction of Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., of East York.
Memorial contributions in Shirley's memory may be made to the York County SPCA, 3159 N. Susquehanna Trail, York, PA 17406.
