On January 12, 2024, Pastor Steven Earl Sparks, a cherished light in the lives of many, was called to his heavenly home. At 69, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family in his Dearborn, Michigan residence, Steven completed his earthly journey. Born on December 29, 1954, in Pontiac, Michigan to James Farnum and Hazel Marie (nee Doebler), Sparks, Steven's life was a testament to faith, love, and service.
A proud graduate of Clawson High School in 1972, Steven's thirst for knowledge led him to Lawrence Tech, where he became the first in his family to receive a college degree. His academic achievements were only the beginning of his journey to serve the Lord.
Pastor Sparks devoted his life to spiritual leadership, nurturing souls at Atonement Lutheran Church in Dearborn and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dearborn Heights. His unwavering faith and inspiring sermons touched countless hearts, guiding them toward the light of God's love. Steven also served as a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts, instilling values of integrity and service in young minds. He was a member of Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Birmingham, where his presence was a source of comfort and wisdom.
Steven's love for storytelling and fellowship was legendary, especially during gatherings at the hunt camp with family and friends. His stories, infused with humor and warmth, will be cherished memories for all who had the privilege of hearing them.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and faith, survived by his sons, Kyle (Amanda) and Brandon, four adored grandchildren, his brother James (Carole A.) Sparks, and his sister Sandra (Dick) Garfield. His parents, James and Hazel, and his son Eric, preceded him in joining the Lord's embrace.
A visitation to honor and remember Pastor Steven Sparks will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, from 2 PM until 8 PM at Gramer Funeral Home, 705 North Main St., Clawson, MI 48017. The celebration of his life and legacy will continue with funeral services on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 11 AM, preceded by an instate at 10 AM, at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Birmingham, Michigan. His final resting place will be the serene Glen Eden Cemetery in Livonia, Michigan, in a private burial.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations to be made to the Nine Line Foundation or to the school at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, honoring Pastor Sparks' commitment to faith, education, and service.
Pastor Steven Earl Sparks, a beacon of God's love, leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched. His journey on earth may have concluded, but his spirit continues to shine brightly, guiding us from above. "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:23).

I walked by Steven's parked car at Hines Park one summer day and overheard his radio playing one of my favorite Christian radio programs. I paused and complimented his choice of programming. He got out of his SUV and we pulled up lawn chairs and conversed for a couple of hours, marveling at our shared love of our Great God and Savior Jesus! He talked alot about his sons (military) and his busy ministerial duties and architectural exploits. Been looking for him ever since that lovely summer day by Newburgh Lake. Now i know the next time I see Steven will be in the glorious presence of our Creator and Savior Who rescued us out of darkness into His marvelous Light. Congratulations Steven and oh what a Savior!
