Sylvia J. Singleton, 84, of Frederick, MD, unexpectedly passed away by sepsis infection on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, MD. Born in Quakertown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Elsie Jacoby, and the loving wife of the late John W. Singleton, Jr. (whose own passing -- just last August -- she deeply mourned).
Sylvia was a graduate of Southern Lehigh High School and Beaver College. She was a physical education teacher for the beginning of her long career, and then dedicated herself to teaching tennis as a USPTA Certified Tennis Pro with her own Greenway Tennis business.
When she wasn't on a court, she enjoyed spending time with her husband at their home in Washington, D.C., and farm in Calvin, West Virginia. She also enjoyed travel: ski trips out West, the Grand Canyon, Italy, Mexico, and other places.
To her only child, son John W. Singleton, III, she was a devoted mom who was always there to support him.
Along with athletics, she was a strong proponent of alternative medicines and practices. In many ways, it worked: she looked about 20 years younger than her age. But if there is any lesson to be learned from her passing, it is this: alternatives are fine, but they have their limits; also make sure to keep yourself healthy by conventional (allopathic) measurements as well.
Survivors: She will be sorely missed and always lovingly remembered by her son, and siblings Virginia Jacoby Sanchez of Silver Spring, MD; Margaret Fera of Allentown, PA; and Kenneth Jacoby of Langhorne, PA. Sylvia also had two other siblings -- Marlene and Joyce Jacoby -- who long ago preceded her in passing.
Services: Burial will be private. Arrangements entrusted to the Cantelmi Long Funeral Home, Bethlehem, PA. A memory tribute may be placed at www.cantelmifuneralhome.com
