Thomas Leon Cottrill, affectionately known to many as Tom, was a beacon of light and wisdom who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he encountered. Born on August 9, 1943, in the serene town of Tillamook, Oregon, Tom was a man whose life journey exemplified the virtues of love, dedication, and selfless service. He was called to his eternal home on November 2, 2025, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Tom's life was a testament to the power of education and the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. He pursued his passion for learning with vigor, earning his Bachelor's degree from Northeastern State University in 1964, his Master's from the University of Arkansas in 1967, and his Doctorate from Oklahoma State University in 1969. His academic journey was not merely for personal enlightenment; it was a stepping stone to his calling as an educator. He shared his knowledge generously as a beloved professor, touching the lives of countless students and earning the distinguished honor of NSU Teacher of the Year.
Beyond his professional achievements, Tom was deeply involved with his alma mater, serving as President of the NSU Alumni Association and as an NSU Centurion. His leadership and commitment to service were hallmarks of his character, and his contributions to the community were both significant and lasting.
Tom's faith was the cornerstone of his existence. As a devout Christian, he lived his life as a reflection of Christ's love, embodying the virtues of kindness and compassion in every action. He found strength and comfort in his relationship with God, and his faith was a source of inspiration to his family and all who knew him.
Family was the heart of Tom's world. He was a loving husband to his wife, Anne, and together they built a life filled with joy and purpose. As a father to Deborah and Jeff, alongside his daughter-in-law Casey, he instilled values of integrity and generosity. Tom's role as a grandfather and great-grandfather was one he cherished deeply, and he took great pride in his grandchildren: Codey, Caley, Randy, Julia, and Carson, as well as his great-grandchildren: Jasper, Tyler, and Araina. His guidance and love will continue to shape their lives for generations to come.
Traveling, teaching, and serving others were the interests that fueled Tom's spirit. He found great pleasure in exploring the world, embracing new cultures, and imparting wisdom to those around him. His selfless nature was evident in every aspect of his life, as he consistently put the needs of others before his own.
Described as wise, loving, and selfless, Tom's character was a rare blend of intellect, empathy, and humility. His presence was a comfort, his counsel sought after, and his love a sanctuary for many. Tom Cottrill lived a life that will be remembered not only for the deeds he accomplished but for the lives he touched and the love he shared.
As we bid farewell to a man of such exceptional character, we take solace in the knowledge that his spirit lives on through the love he gave and the wisdom he imparted. Tom's journey on earth may have ended, but his story continues in the hearts of those who loved him and in the legacy he leaves behind.
