Thomas Wayne Huseby passed away peacefully at his home in Sarasota, FL, on March 14, 2024. Born on September 2, 1938, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he was the first child of Sydney Bernard Huseby and Genevieve Paulson Huseby. His life is highlighted by his devotion to his family, education, and traditional values.
Tom moved around as a child, ultimately graduating high school in Springfield, IL. He then enrolled at Purdue University, earning a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, and continued to Princeton University, where he attained multiple graduate degrees, culminating in a Ph.D. in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. This academic foundation laid the groundwork for a distinguished career marked by innovation and achievement.
During his time at Purdue, Tom met the love of his life, Marilyn Edmier. Their marriage on July 1, 1961 commenced the married couple's journey together that spanned over six decades. The young couple settled in New Jersey after Tom joined Bell Labs, a hub of scientific research, where he would later ascend to a group executive position focused on creating and distributing telecommunications products around the world. Characteristic of his engineering background, Tom considered himself a problem-solver, both in his professional and personal lives, a life-long learner, and a teacher. Retiring from Bell Labs in 1995, Tom then continued contributing to the telecommunications industry as a board member at Applied Innovation, a publicly listed telecom equipment provider based in Ohio.
Tom and Marilyn's union resulted in a strong, traditional family with four children. His family was the focus of his adult life and a source of immense joy and satisfaction. Each of his children followed his traditional model, marrying once and having multiple children, resulting in 12 grandchildren. His legacy continues through his children and grandchildren who embrace his values of integrity, hard work, and family.
Thomas Wayne Huseby is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Edmier Huseby, his children and their spouses: James Lawrence Huseby (Debra) of Tampa, FL; Holly Huseby Loving (J. Mark) of Seabrook Island, SC; Todd Paulson Huseby (Laura) of River Forest, IL; and Heidi Huseby Slater (Sean) of Downingtown, PA. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Hunter Thomas, Harrison Todd, and Hannah Clare Huseby; Conner Easton and Thomas Jackson ("Jack") Loving; Brad Edmier, Gregory Frederick, and Christopher James Huseby; James Stafford ("Jay"), Todd Christopher, and John Huseby Slater. His beloved grandson, Thomas Todd ("Tommy") Slater, preceded him in death.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 pm ET on Friday, March 22, 2024, at Bird Key Yacht Club in Sarasota, FL.
