Thomas Shoan

It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Thomas Raymond Shoan, age 61, on March 27, 2025, at his home in Troy, Michigan. Born in South Bend, Indiana, Tom was the beloved son of Judith Ellen Hartman and Edward Nels Shoan. Following Judy and Ed's divorce, they each went on to remarry, and Tom was blessed with step-father Jack Kiley and step-mother Joann (Dres). He grew up primarily in Southeast Michigan alongside his sisters, Katy Overby (Keith), Anne Vincent (Rick), and Lisa Bradley (Scott). Tom graduated from Avondale High School and went on to earn a BBA from Western Michigan University and an MBA from Wayne State University.
A dedicated father, he is survived by his children Davis Shoan, Haley Scarlata (Mark), and Dalton Shoan, their mother, Michele Shoan (Engelberts), his beautiful granddaughter, Olive Priscilla Scarlata, step-brothers, step-sisters, dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless dear friends and colleagues.
As the Owner and President of Sutherland Felt in Madison Heights, Michigan since 1998, Tom's strong leadership skills fostered an environment of camaraderie and mutual respect. He considered his Sutherland Team as an extended family. Beyond his professional endeavors, he was known for his outgoing personality and generous heart. Tom was the life of the party, he found happiness in bringing people together over good food and laughter. He had a zest for life and a wide array of hobbies, including cooking, fishing, boating, tennis, ping pong, running, fast cars, and collecting loud shoes. His generosity, humor, and boundless energy will be profoundly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 12th, 2025, at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, located at 2225 E. 14 Mile Road, Birmingham, MI 48009.
Visitation at 10:00 am, Service at 11:00am. Offsite luncheon will follow immediately. For those who cannot attend in person, the service will be live-streamed here.
