Wanda Powell Obituary

Wanda grew up in Carbon Hill, Alabama graduating from Carbon Hill High School in 1961. She married Jim, her husband of 47 years in 1962 and moved to the Venice, Florida area where they raised their daughters.
Wanda worked as a Secretary at Venice High School for 34 years. She made a significant impact to girls' sports by starting the girls' golf team in 1981. During her 20-year coaching tenure, her teams produced multiple individual state champions, state runner up finishes and district titles. Several of the young women went on to play at the collegiate level.
An avid golfer, Wanda played recreationally and competitively in the Venice area. She and Jim were founding members of Misty Creek Country Club in 1985.
Wanda leaves behind two daughters, Lisa Hawkins (James) of Venice, Florida and Sherri Powell (Debbie Suzewits) of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, a sister, Judy Files of Leeds, Alabama and grandson, Jacob Hawkins of Venice, Florida. Wanda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Powell, and her brother, Edwin O. Campbell, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at Toale Brothers Funeral Home – Ewing Chapel,140 E Venice Ave., on October 19, 2023, at 4:00 PM with a visitation starting at 2:00 PM.
