Beloved brothers and sisters, today we gather in solemn joy to celebrate the life and legacy of a remarkable soul, William Vincent Caufield III, fondly known to us as Bill, Toe, and Slicky. Born on the fourteenth day of August in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-six in Newark, New Jersey, Bill was a beacon of light and love to all who knew him. On the eighth day of April in the year 2025, Bill was called home to be with the Lord, leaving a legacy of love, strength, and honor.
Bill was the cherished husband of Michele Caufield, the proud father of Kylee Maclain Rogers (married to Joseph Rogers), and the esteemed stepfather of Courtney Scott (married to Thomas Scott), James Thompson (with his wife Nina Thompson), and Ryan Thompson (partnered with River Brookes). His life was further blessed with the joy of his grandchildren, Brailyn Pomeroy, Alayah Taylor Rogers, Gavin and Gage Scott, Hannah, James Jr., and Parker Thompson. Born to his loving parents, William and Elizabeth Caufield, Bill shared the bonds of family with his siblings Michael (and his wife Denise), sister Elizabeth (and her husband Ralph LaBoy), and his brother-in-law Raymond Cochran Sr. (alongside Kathleen Cochran, who preceded him in glory). His brother Keith Caufield also awaits him in heaven. Bill's nieces and nephews, Raymond Jr. (with Brittany), Patrick (with Jessica), Andrew, Logan (with Samantha), Michael Jr. (with Julia), Brenden, Erin (with Donny), Cassidy (with Joseph), and Abigail. Last but not least, his faithful companions, Luke and Riley Caufield, and all other extended family.
Bill's life was one of service and dedication. After graduating from Union High School in 1984, he embarked on a journey of lifelong learning and professional growth. He served our country with honor as a U.S. Navy Boiler Tech from 1986 to 1994, earning accolades including the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle E Ribbon, and the National Defense Service Medal. His post-military career was marked by commitment to his work with local 68, where he was a respected figure among his peers. As a Critical System Engineer with a wealth of certifications and licenses, Bill mastered his craft with distinction.
Bill's heart was as vast as the open road, and he found joy in riding his Harley, the embrace of cigar smoke, and the warmth of a fine scotch shared with friends and family. His adventurous spirit led him to explore the world with his beloved Michele, and his passion for hunting, fishing, and cruising was matched only by his dedication as the Chapter President of ocean iron, Strength and Honor, and his local American Legion.
An embodiment of selflessness, Bill was a man who put others before himself, and his passion for life was evident in every action and every relationship. He was a man of faith, who lived by the words of the Apostle Paul, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7). Bill indeed fought the good fight, and in his journey, he taught us the true meaning of strength and honor.
As we bid farewell to Bill, we are comforted by the knowledge that he rides on in the eternal sunshine of Heaven, his laughter echoing in the hearts he touched. He leaves behind not just a family, but a brotherhood, a community, and a world enriched by his presence. Bill Caufield III lived a life that was full, a life that mattered, a life that will be remembered with smiles and stories for generations to come.
Let us not mourn, dear friends, but rather give thanks for the time we were blessed to share with Bill. Let us carry his spirit within us, living each day with the courage, generosity, and joy that he exemplified. And as we part ways, let us hold fast to the promise that we will see him again, in that great reunion beyond the sunset. Amen.
