William Hayes Cullen

William Hayes “Bill” Cullen, affectionately known as Willie, Rugger, Chef, and Captain, age 74, of Enola, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 17, 2025, after a courageous battle with kidney cancer.

Born on June 11, 1951, in Harrisburg, Bill was the son of the late Thomas F. Cullen and Helen (Bancroft) Cullen-Urich.

Bill’s life was marked first and foremost by his proud service to his country. Immediately after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He rose to the rank of Lance Corporal and was decorated for exemplary service. Following active duty, he continued his military commitment as a Huey helicopter mechanic in both the Marine Corps Reserve and a tank commander with the Pennsylvania National Guard while earning his BA in Political Science from East Stroudsburg University. A true and proud patriot, Bill was already in full celebration mode for this year’s 250th Anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps—a milestone he greatly anticipated honoring.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Beverly “Bev” Jane (Kline) Cullen; two stepsons, Jan Michael Nawa and his wife, Sarah of Newville, and Adam Nawa and his fiancée Lisa Failor of Camp Hill; his cherished granddaughter, Natalie Nawa of Camp Hill; and his beloved canine companion, Buster.

A man of many talents and boundless curiosity, Bill embraced life to the fullest. An avid traveler, skier, motorcyclist, and sailor, he found joy both on the water and on the open road.

Known by friends for his love of cooking, he could create a feast for five or fifty with ease, and especially delighted in perfecting his craft with his treasured Yoder smoker. Truly a Renaissance man, Bill pursued countless interests with passion and skill.

Rugby was among his lifelong loves. He played with various teams, including Old Gaelic, for more than 25 years, and continued to support and cheer on “the boys” long after his playing days ended. A follower of current events and an enthusiastic conversationalist, Bill could talk knowledgeably with anyone about nearly anything. He had a remarkable memory for history and dates, and an equal gift for gaming, whether on the computer or across a board.

A creative soul, Bill loved to paint. For him, the best gift was a personal one, and many treasured his thoughtful paintings given from the heart.

Above all, Bill will be remembered as a fierce and loyal friend—deeply loved and deeply missed. His passing leaves a hole in the lives of all who knew him.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bill’s life at a gathering on Friday, September 12, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of remembrance at 1:00 p.m., at Buhrig’s Gathering Place, 25 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville. Cremation was private.
