William "Bill" D. Santmyer, age 71, of Orrville, died Thursday, August 8, 2024, at his residence, following a period of declining health.
William was born on November 11, 1952, in Orrville, Ohio, to the late Clair and Vivian (Killian) Santmyer and graduated from Orrville High School in 1972. He married Cheryl Maurer on April 4, 1987, in Orrville.
He worked for Smith Grocery & Buehler's Grocery.
William was a past president for the Orrville Athletic Booster Club, and a member of the Wayne County Official's Association. Bill was a fan of the Orrville Red Riders, the Cleveland Browns, Cavs, and Guardians, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. In the winter you would see Bill on the court officiating basketball games, or in the spring on the diamond umpiring baseball games. He coached a men's softball team for many years. He kept the scorebook for Orrville basketball games for several years. Bill enjoyed bowling. In 2002 Bill was the recipient of the Keystone Service to Youth Award from the Orrville Area Boy's & Girl's Club.
In addition to Cheryl, he is survived by son, Michael Santmyer of Kingman, AZ; three siblings, Joy (Matt) Slick of Columbus, David "Slink" (Linda) Santmyer of Orrville, and Amy (Jeff) Scheatzle of Canton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Dennis Santmyer, and Mary McMahon.
Friends may call on Monday, August 12, 2024, at Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 300 S. Walnut St., Orrville, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Services will be held at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, at Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, with Pastor Paul Simonsen officiating. Burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville.
