Paul Ware Obituary

Paul Ware, pilot, engineer, and inventor, died peacefully Tuesday, January 7, at his home in Rome, GA. He was 89 years old.

A lifelong innovator and seeker of justice, Paul was born Paul Nelson Ware in 1935 in Rome, GA, to parents Doris and James Ware. Paul graduated from Rome High School in 1953 and then attended Georgia Institute of Technology from 1953-1960. Part of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, Paul worked his way through college as a co-op student, earned a Navy ROTC scholarship his senior year, and graduated from GA Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering. Paul flew A4-Ds as a Navy pilot from 1960-1965 as part of the Rampagers VFA 83 Attack Squadron, mainly off of the U.S.S. Forrestal. In 1961, Paul met his first wife, Penny, while at a training school in Memphis. After the navy, Paul worked briefly for IBM before entering his career as a flight engineer for Pan American from 1966 - 1985.

Although a diabetes diagnosis in 1985 ended his professional flying career, Paul was not idle as he spent his remaining years as an innovator and entrepreneur. He met his second wife, Joan, in 1986. Paul said, "My longtime friends, the Tillmans, wanted me to meet Joan who was working at Knight's Jewelers at the time. Denise set up a date and put a note on Joan's desk. I showed up at Knight's and told Joan that she was my date. It was all news to her because she hadn't seen Denise's note on her desk. It went uphill from there." Paul's drive and intelligence led to multiple patents, some of which we still use today.

Paul was a loyal friend, father, and husband with a dynamic wit and personality. Those who knew Paul well would agree that he was, "Not always right, but never in doubt." One story in particular that frames the personality of Paul Ware happened while at GA Tech. One afternoon after lunch, Paul succumbed to dozing, and the instructor said loudly, "Bored, Mr. Ware?" Paul immediately stood straight up and said, "No sir! I'm never bored in my own presence." The same scenario played out during a training course with IBM. Paul's quip caused such a clamor that after the laughter had subsided, the instructor sighed and said, "I think we can all use the afternoon off."

Paul is survived by his wife, Joan; three children, Dabney, James, and Sue; step-children, Stacey and Shane; and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.

According to Paul's desires, he is being cremated and there will be a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to your favorite charity.

Like PapaMort I met Paul in 1966 when we were assigned to San Francisco for initial 707 training. Paul and I were roommates until training was completed. Paul was probably the most intelligent person I ever had the pleasure of knowing. Eventually we transferred to Miami and were able to spend a lot of time with him and his family. Paul was my Best Man when I married my wife Melinda in 1982. Like Paul who shared his life with many, was also my best friend like Mort. When Paul moved back to Rome on our first visit we had the pleasure of meeting Joan for the first time. We joked a lot that we had both married above our station. During our time with Pan Am we shared many adventures. We went through our 707 rating certification. Paul was active in representing our pilots negotiating with company officers and board members. I will never forget when we met with Pan Am´s President and board members over allowing the Unions finance new aircraft. The discussions got pretty heated and one of the officers made a negative comment concerning our presentation and Paul´s Georgia accent. Paul´s response was, "Don´t let slow talking confuse you with slow thinking!" Anyone who knew Paul knew how smart and articulate he was. Paul was one of the most influential people in my family's life. Our children referred to him as their Uncle Paul. Like Mort Paul was my best friend for many years. Melinda and I will always remember him fondly and truly missed. We prayed constantly for Paul and Joan, they were special in our lives and if the good Lord is willing we will meet again. Paul and I were friends/classmates at Rome High School and Georgia Tech; fraternity brothers at Tech and shared the same co-op job with GE in Rome. After Tech we wandered away leading our own lives but stayed in touch and later reconnected. I stayed with Paul and Joan several times on rare visits to Rome and high school reunions. He came to visit me in the NC mountains.
I always enjoyed Paul's wit and his tales. I've lost a good friend.

Paul was a lifelong friend of my husband Joe S. Payne, from time in Rome schools to time at Georgia Tech and beyond. I got to know Paul best when we were living in Coral Springs, FL in the mid 1970's and Paul and his family were as well, when he was flying for Pan AM. Over the years we spent a good amount of time together once we moved back to Georgia in 1984 and Paul was back in Rome. Thinking of Joan and his family during this time. Praying for peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Paul was my best friend. Met him at Pan Am Airlines in 1966 and discovered we had both studied at Ga Tech. He had been a Navy pilot and I flew in The USMC. 58 years of being close friends and as he said last week "We had a good run." So true.

Paul was one of my favorite cousins. He always made us laugh, he was very generous. Easy to be around. We always loved having him at family functions. One year he gave each of us cousins a keychain with our name in bronze. I still use mine. He will definitely be missed. Love you, Paul.
