Margery "Margie" (Schlamp) Shaw

Margery "Margie" Wayne (Schlamp) Shaw, 89, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2012 at VNA Charlier Hospice Center.
Margie was born in Evansville, Indiana on February 15, 1923 to the late Arthur G. and Louise (Meyer) Schlamp. She graduated from Central High School and attended Hanover College. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama, a Master's degree from Columbia University and a Medical Degree from the University of Michigan. She also received two honorary Doctor of Science degrees from the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana. Margie was an Associate Professor of Medical Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School. She then moved to Houston, TX in 1967 and became a Professor and Director of Medical Genetics at the University of Texas Health Science Center. In 1979, she formed the Health Law Institute at the University of Texas.
Always a scholastic over-achiever, Margie attended law school at night for four years while continuing her full time job and received a Law Degree from the University of Houston. In 1974, she wrote a congressional bill for Senators Edward Kennedy and Jacob Javitz titled, "National Genetic Diseases Act", which was passed and signed into legislature by President Gerald Ford. She also drafted genetic legislation for Senator Edward Kennedy to establish Medical Genetics Centers, and she served as consultant on the artificial heart and the AIDS epidemic.
Margie was a visiting professor at Yale, University of North Carolina and University of Utah. She was professor-at-large at Cornell University for six years. She served as president of the Genetics Society of America and the American Society of Human Genetics. She has published more than 200 medical, scientific, and legal articles. She is listed in Who's Who in America. She also received numerous honors and awards, including the 1970 Achievement Award from the American Association of University Women.
Margie retired in 1988. Her hobbies included genealogy and logic puzzles.
Margie is survived by: daughter, Barbara R. Shaw, of Scottsdale, AZ; sister, Marylee Barnard, of Austin, TX; brother, Leonard Schlamp of Evansville, IN; grandson, Richard C. Lee, of Scottsdale, AZ; nieces; Jane Kerber (Jurgen), Emilie Letcher (Marshall), Mary Ann Miller (Steve); also surviving are several beloved great nieces and great nephews.
Margie is preceded in death by, Charles Raymond Shaw in 1998, sister, Billie Payne, brother-in-law, Arthur Barnard, sister-in-law, Anna Belle Schlamp and a niece, Barbara Harding.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue with Dr. Daniel Lovell officiating. Burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 4-8 P.M. on Monday, July 30, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home.
