Carmine D. Clemente

Carmine D. Clemente, M.S, Ph.D., a leader in brain research and respected educator at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, has died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 88. He was a devoted husband of 48 years to his loving wife, Julie, who survives him.
Upon completion of his doctorate in anatomy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952, Dr. Clemente joined the newly formed UCLA School of Medicine faculty. Through the years, he served in many leadership roles. He became Chairman of the Department of Anatomy, coordinating an impressive faculty of anatomists who made significant contributions to our understanding of the relationship of the brain to reproduction. Subsequently, he served as Director of the UCLA Brain Research Institute.
Dr. Clemente was also an internationally renowned author. His book, Atlas of Human Anatomy, has been a leading guide to medical students and professionals for more than 50 years. It is currently in its 6th edition. He also completed an extensive revision of the 30th American edition of Gray's Anatomy.
For more than 60 years, Dr. Clemente taught thousands of medical and dental students at UCLA Medical School. He is remembered as a patient, inspiring instructor who cared deeply for his students.
Dr. Clemente's passing is a loss for UCLA and for the greater neuroscience and medical community. He was the quintessential academician, a scientist, educator and scholar. Above all, he is remembered as a loving husband and a dear friend to many.
