Atwood Newsome Askew, 91, of Burlington, NC passed away at Coble Creek Healthcare Center at Twin Lakes Community on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
A native of Bertie County, NC, he was the husband of the late Barbara Burkett Askew and the son of Atwood Askew and Blanche Newsome Askew, both deceased.
In high school, Atwood developed a lifelong passion for tennis, both playing and providing lessons. He attended UNC at Chapel Hill where he was the #2 tennis player on the team. Atwood was a proud veteran of the U. S. Army. He was employed by Belk Department Stores for 40 years. He also owned a real estate company, Tar Heel Realty, and an antique shop in Chapel Hill for many years. He and Barbara were long time members of University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill prior to moving to Twin Lakes and joining First Baptist Church of Elon. While living at Twin Lakes Community, Atwood enjoyed playing cornhole and sitting outside with his neighbors.
Survivors include his son, Atwood N. Askew, Jr. and wife Pat of Burlington; daughter, Robin McConnell and husband Rob of Gibsonville; three grandchildren, Kelly Askew, Ben Askew and wife Anna, and Katie Britton and husband Jordan; two great grandchildren, Helen and Oliver Britton; a sister, Peggy Askew Futrell; and a nephew, Robert E. Futrell, Jr.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at 11:00 am at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square, NC.
A memorial service will be conducted at the First Baptist Church of Elon on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 11:00 am by Dr. David Durham.
