Bruce Eldon Haynes

Bruce Eldon Haynes, 77, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2023 after a 7-month battle with liver cancer and 29-years with Crohn’s disease. His endurance and willingness to submit to the Lord’s will has become his legacy.

 

Bruce was born November 12, 1946, and is the son of Brooks and Leone (Toni) Whittier and spent his childhood in Ogden, Utah. He loved learning and was a great student, graduating from Ogden High School in 1965.  He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the South German area and loved every minute of it.  Upon his return he entered Weber State College where he met his eternal sweetheart, Marsha Anderson. They married on August 20, 1971, in the Salt Lake Temple. He continued his education at the University of Utah where he received his BS and MBA degrees.  He served in the Army Reserves graduating as the distinguished AIT trainee.  Bruce and Marsha spent 45 beautiful years in South Jordan, Utah, where they raised their four children. After serving a senior couple mission in Salt Lake City, Utah, they moved to West Haven, Utah where they now reside.

 

Bruce’s professional career followed his interest and love of business and finance. He worked in banking with an emphasis on mortgages and loans, in telecommunications sales, and in real estate. His success in business can largely be attributed to his ability to get to know people on a very personal level which allowed for life-long relationships. One of his greatest talents was the ability to remember the names of people and details about their individual lives. Bruce’s first real job at Alpine Sports fueled a life-long love of the outdoors.

 

Bruce lived for a sunny day on the slopes or the lake. He would get so excited about the perfect powder or glass on the lake and spent his best days with family and friends chasing these moments. To help his children learn to ski he would ski down the slope backwards holding two of the kids’ skis together at the same time, smiling every minute. He helped numerous friends and family learn how to wakeboard and waterski, showing incredible patience and encouragement.  Some of his other interests include: weightlifting, drawing, singing, serving others, car shows, tinkering, making lists, Excel, dating his beautiful wife and attending the temple. These interests have built life-long friendships that are full of cherished memories.

 

Bruce loved to share his testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ. He had the opportunity to serve in bishoprics, as executive secretaries, high council, and various teaching and leadership roles. He was a humble and faithful example of ministering and ensured that anyone he encountered knew of his love for them. He was passionate about family history, missionary work, and service. He loved his time in the scriptures and the temple.

 

He is preceded in death by his father, Brooks Whittier and brother Neil. He is survived by his wife Marsha Anderson Haynes and his 99-year-old mother Leone (Toni) Whittier, his children: Jeremy (Laurie) Haynes, Stephanie (Eric) Bitter, Kristin (Troy) Parkin, and Ryan (Erin) Haynes; and his siblings Ed (Georgia) Haynes, Donna (Tim) Thompson, Kevin (Susie) Whittier, and Karen (Larry) Cook.  His posterity includes 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

 

The family expresses their deep appreciation for the love and care from all of the amazing doctors, nurses, hospitalists, CNA’s, and office staff who helped navigate Bruce’s complicated health situation. We also express our sincere love and gratitude for the members of the Kanesville Ward who consistently and lovingly provided support during this journey.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at the Kanesville Ward, 3300 South 4700 West, West Haven, UT.  The family will meet with friends on Friday, December 22, 2023 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South and on Saturday from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. at the church. The funeral services will be live-streamed on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at 10 a.m. on this obituary page.
