Charles Enes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home from Feb. 9 to Feb. 12, 2026.
Charles F. Enes, known as Chuck to some and Charlie to others, 78, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025 at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough, ME. He was surrounded by family and compassionate caregivers who had become like family during his time there.

Charles was born to Charles and Virginia Enes of South Windsor, CT, on August 24, 1947, where he grew up and graduated from South Windsor High School. As a young man he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Navy in 1965. He proudly served as a Communications Technician during the Vietnam War, stationed in Guam and aboard the submarines USS Gato and USS Hammerhead. His dedicated service earned him the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and he was honorably discharged in 1969.

In January 1970, Charles married Sylvia Fitzgerald of Beltsville, MD. Together they made their home in Manchester, CT. After Sylvia's death he moved to Phoenix, AZ and eventually settled in Boothbay Harbor, ME.

A man of remarkable skill and steady hands, Charles worked as a draftsman, mason, and carpenter. Those who knew him admired his craftsmanship and his quiet pride in a job well done. Beyond his work, he found joy in simple pleasures: listening to John Prine, enjoying A Prairie Home Companion, and riding his beloved Harley Davidson.

In the spring of 2023, Charles became a resident of the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough, ME. There he formed meaningful friendships and was cared for with dignity and kindness. Tim, his aide and constant companion and Carol, tended to his personal needs, with warmth and devotion. The staff in Unit C gave him three additional years of comfort, laughter, and quality of life, for which his family will be forever grateful.

Charles is survived by his son James Enes and his wife Rebekah, and their two sons Sam and Max; his daughter Megan Olivo and her husband Seth, of Brunswick, ME and Keene, NH, his granddaughter Jamie and his grandson Tyson Enes of Clinton, CT, along with step-grandchildren Cam and Erin of Keene, NH. He is also survived by his sister Trish Enes Brunet and her husband Pierre of Scarborough, ME and Beaconsfield, QC.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Sylvia and by his parents, Charles and Virginia Enes.

Charles lived a life of service, hard work, humor, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Burial will take place in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Maine Veterans' Home, 290 Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074, in gratitude for the exceptional care he received.
