Daniel Mullen, age 54 of Chesterton, IN, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. He was born on November 30, 1969, in Chicago, IL to Patrick and Rita Mullen.
Dan grew up on the north side of Valparaiso with his parents and 5 older siblings. They enjoyed hours of adventure in the nearby woods, riding ponies and horses and visiting the beach together.
He graduated from Chesterton High School where he was a record holding swimmer for many years. Dan worked high school and college summers as a lifeguard for the National Lakeshore, developing many lifelong friendships during that time that he cherished throughout his life. He graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in neurobiology and began his career working in Chicago at the Chicago Board of Trade. Dan ended his career in the same field as a Senior Vice President at Lightspeed Financial Services Group in Chicago where he was a valued friend and respected colleague. His relationships with his colleagues were of the greatest value to Dan and he developed many lifelong friendships.
He lived most of his adult life in Chesterton where he raised his 3 sons coaching basketball and baseball for many years. The most important thing in the world to Dan was spending as much time as possible with his three boys. Dan loved watching his sons compete and attended almost every one of his son's sporting events. He also enjoyed coaching many seasons at The Duneland Family YMCA, Liberty Rec, State Park Little League and for the Vipers.
Dan loved playing and watching whatever the sport of the season was. He loved playing catch or football in the yard, card and board games, made up games, talking politics and sports, watching movies or series, and cheering every season for the Chicago Bears with his boys.
Dan is survived by his three children, Jack (Emily Smits) Mullen of Milwaukee, WI; Nick Mullen and Chris Mullen of Chesterton, IN; his mother, Rita Mullen of Miller, IN; his siblings, Jim (Vivien) Mullen, Kate Mullen and Maureen Mullen, all of Chesterton, IN; and his former wife, Janna Mullen of Chesterton, IN. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Patrick Mullen; and two brothers, Pat Mullen, and Tom Mullen.
Visitation will take place at Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN, on Thursday, May 23rd from 4:00-8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held Friday, May 24, 2024, at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church, 434 S. 2nd Street, Chesterton, IN, with a luncheon to follow at the church. There will be a private burial at Chesterton Cemetery.
