Galion: David Robert Porter passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Avita Hospital in Galion. He was 60 years young.
David was born in Akron on March 20, 1964 to parents David Ray & Judith Linda (Riley) Porter. He graduated from Norton High School with the Class of 1982.
Dave worked as a craftsman for Mitchell Plastics in Barberton before retiring. He was a plastics genius. If you could dream it, he could build it. One of his most talked about projects involved helping with the installation of the John Lennon display at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Not only did he touch one of John Lennon's evidence bags, but he also met Dick Goddard, a Cleveland weather man. Dave "busted" Dick Goddard applying his news station's sticker on a rival news van. Mr. Goddard turned around and acknowledged Dave with his first ever fist bump.
Dave was the sweetest, kindest guy; ask anyone who knew him. He was an inventor, a tinkerer, a rocket scientist and a radio controlled fanatic. He was a daredevil in his own right – skydiving, parachuting, Red Bull Flutag, Soap Box Derby. He was a musician and continued to share that experience with the next generation. Dave was a lover of animals. He fed the birds, the squirrels, the groundhog and the neighborhood cats. His heart was big.
Dave was a master distiller in the art of moonshine; which, by the way, the moonshine still might be for sale. Dave was known to listeners of WNIR Radio as "Moonshiner." Each morning was spent listening to and talking on the air with Phil and Joyce.
He is survived by his father, David R. Porter; sister Christine Douglas, brother Michael (Marcy) Porter; nieces and nephews Morgan Douglas, Colin Douglas, Kelsey (Joe) Mounts, Curtiss Porter, Haylee Alkire, Joslyn (Andrew) Hickman; great-nieces and nephews Jacie, Evalynn, Maverick, Raiden, Meredith, Jackson, Parker, Camden; as well as his feline friend Candy.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, mother and brother-in-law Brett Douglas.
The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 3-5 pm in the Banquet Room of the Galion VFW Post #4329.

Just saw this . I worked with David (Harley) Porter for several years in Akron and Mansfield. Heart of gold. So fun to just hang out or sit and play guitars. My thoughts and prayers go out to brother Mike and family. So very, very sorry for your loss. God bless you

My wife and I, for many years, are avid listeners of WNIR and were big fans of Moonshiner, and his brother Mad-Man! Dave will be missed more than you know. We enjoyed his presence on air and will fondly remember him with smiles. We feel we are blessed for the fact that we got to enjoy his calls to the daily morning radio program. R.I.P. my friend, You gave us much enjoyment!
