Dorothy Symes Donaldson, formerly of Chatham, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025, in the sunny state of Florida, bringing to a close a remarkable journey that began on September 30, 1926, in Union, New Jersey.
Born to Lillian Marie Symes (nee Hagmeier) and Edgar F. Symes, Dorothy's early life was marked by a strong sense of community and an unwavering dedication to her Christian faith. A proud graduate of Union High School's class of 1944, she went on to refine her skills at Berkeley Secretarial School, setting the stage for what would become a distinguished career.
For 24 years, Dorothy served with distinction as the Assistant to the Business Administrator of the Chatham Borough Public Schools. Her professionalism and efficiency were matched only by her friendly demeanor, making her a beloved figure among colleagues and the many families she encountered.
Dorothy's life was one of service not only in her professional capacity but also through her deep involvement in church activities. A talented pianist, she graced the choirs of various Lutheran churches in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida with her musical gifts. Her love for teaching shone brightly in her role as a Sunday school teacher, where she imparted wisdom and kindness to the young minds under her care.
Beyond her formal roles, Dorothy's passion for life was evident in her love for music, and the simple joys she found in the companionship of dogs, the beauty of birds, and the playful antics of squirrels. Her home was often filled with melodies and the laughter that follows good company and shared stories.
A loyal friend, Dorothy was the last surviving member of her "girls club", friendships that began in elementary school.
Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert J. Donaldson, her steadfast parents, Lillian and Edgar, and leaves behind a legacy through her children, Keith A. Wilcox, Robyn Wilcox Ahlers, and James D. Wilcox, along with her step-children, Warren Donaldson and Barbara Donaldson. Each of them carries forward a piece of Dorothy's loving spirit and her unwavering kindness. Dorothy also leaves behind 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, who all loved her dearly.
To know Dorothy was to know a soul that was friendly, kind, and loving-a beacon of light who never failed to offer support or a listening ear. Her memory will be cherished and her presence sorely missed, but the impact she made on this world through her love and service will undoubtedly endure.
As we bid farewell to Dorothy Symes Donaldson, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the time we were privileged to share with her. Her life was a testament to the beauty that can be found in dedication to family, faith, and community. May her story continue to inspire all who knew her and may her spirit find eternal peace and joy.
