Elizabeth (Betty) Anne Brown, 91, of Edgewater Park, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 8, 2024, at home with her daughter and cat, Baby, by her side.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Elizabeth resided in Edgewater Park most of her life. She graduated from Frankford High School and later went on to earn a BS in Business Administration from Trenton State College. While stationed at Lajes Air Force Base on the Azores Islands, Betty started to work full-time as an administrative assistant. She went on to further her career at the 21st Air Force Headquarters at McGuire AFB. Her final place of employment in the civil service landed her at the Naval Aviation Supply Depot. She continued to work after retirement at the Burlington Frame Shop, where she used her artistic talent and "eye for color."
In February, 1942, Elizabeth met her future husband, Joseph, at a Service Club dance while he was on leave from the military. Duty called and after five short days, he was back in Germany. A year later, they were engaged to be married. Together they had one child, Elizabeth (Beth) Hartman. Betty was a devoted wife for 70 years and took care of Joe until he passed. There is no telling how many cups of hot tea she served or how many times she answered to, "Elizabeth!" bellowing from his "man cave."
Betty's faith was foundational to her life. She attended Rehoboth Methodist Church until she was thirty. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Willingboro, NJ and was active in the Rancocas United Methodist Church for more than thirty years.
She had a life-long love of art and developed her talent at a young age. She attended the Cheltenham Art Center and the Moore Institute of Art as a young girl. As an adult, she was an active member of the Willingboro Art Alliance, where she regularly attended workshops and classes.
Betty's love of art permeated every area of her life- especially her home. She loved her home and made it a warm, beautiful place to be. Her reserved nature prevented her from publicly sharing her art, but her home was dotted with oils, pastels, and charcoals that she created. Setting the table for a holiday meal was an artistic task in and of itself and was often shared with her sister, Joyce. Each tablescape was a work of art composed of well-loved settings of china and family keepsakes.
It was no secret that Betty loved animals- especially her cats. There was never a time in her life when at least one cat did not reside in her home where they received the canine royal treatment.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Beth and her husband, Rob Hartman; sister, Joyce Winkelman; brother-in-law, Richard Brown and his children, Patrick, Jeffrey (Jenine), Jennifer Burtulato (John), Eugene; and, great nieces, Morgan, Angela and Gina.
Visitation and funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Columbus Baptist Church, 24260 W. Main Street, Columbus, NJ. Visitation is from 10:00-11:00, followed by the funeral service. Details regarding internment are forth-coming.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Elizabeth's memory to the Black Beauty Ranch www.humanesociety.org or to a charity of your choice.
