May 6, 1949 - October 17, 2022
In Memoriam
Frederick A. McLaughlin Ill, 73, passed away on October 17, 2022. Born to Frederick A. McLaughlin, Jr. (who passed away in 2017) of Amherst, Massachusetts and Barbara R. McLaughlin (who passed away in 2004) of Sunderland, Massachusetts. Fred was the oldest of five children, which also included Steve, Ruth, Rich and Dave (who passed away in 1997). Though Fred's family roots are in Massachusetts, he was born in Maine, raised in Maryland and lived in 13 states until settling in New Jersey.
Fred enlisted in the United States Army in 1970. In 1971 Fred qualified to study German in an immersive 32-week course at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC), formerly known as Army Defense Language Institute (DLIWC), located in Monterey, California. He trained for an additional 9-weeks at the United States Air Force Security Service (USAFSS) and was then deployed to Germany as a Signal Intelligence Voice Interceptor.
Fred received his BA in Photojournalism and completed course work for his Master of Education Program in Educational Technology from the University of Maryland, College Park. He also obtained a certificate in Advanced Computer Graphics and Desktop Publishing from Montclair State University and completed 15 of 21 credits in the Graduate Program at New Jersey City University, New Jersey, toward a Certificate of Teacher of the Handicapped.
Fred worked in medical device sales, photography and graphics for many years, but his true calling was his work in special education, which began in 2000 and continued into tutoring until his retirement in 2018.
Fred is survived by his wife of more than 37 years, Barbara, son Adam, daughter Alaina, daughter Heather, son-in-law Steve, and grandsons Anthony & Nicholas. He is also survived by three of his four siblings, many nieces and nephews, relatives from The McLaughlin and Williams' clans, as well as all branches of Barb's family and many dear friends.
An Honor Guard Ceremony and memorial service were held for Fred at BG William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ on October 28, 2022, where he is interred.
