Colonel Howard George Sholl, Jr. US Air Force (Retired), died December 19, 2024, at the age of 80. He was a resident of Wilmington, Delaware, where he had lived since 1992.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 14, 1944, Howard was the son of the late Howard G. Sholl, and Elizabeth M. (Sutton) Sholl. He attended high school at Baltimore City College, graduating in 1962. He earned a B.A. in Political Science (1966) and an M.A. in History (1969) from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech). He also earned an MBA from the University of Missouri in 1977.
Following four years in the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force upon graduation. He served 24 ½ years as an Intelligence Officer and a Missile Combat Crew Commander in both line and staff positions. He retired from the Air Force in September 1992, from his position as the Director for Intelligence Resources at Headquarters, United States Air Forces in Europe.
After retirement from the Air Force, Howard began his second career when he was appointed as an elections official for the State of Delaware. He served as the Deputy Director of Elections for New Castle County for 27 years, retiring in 2020.
When he wasn't working, Howard enjoyed giving his time and energy to the Triangle Neighborhood Association, the Sons of the American Revolution, Stockings for Soldiers, the SHAPE Officers Association, and the Air Force Association. Howard demonstrated his avid support of his alma mater through his active participation in the Virginia Tech Alumni Association's First State Chapter, service on the Alumni Advisory Board for Virginia Tech's College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and his regular treks to Blacksburg, Virginia for Hokie football games.
Howard is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marcia M. (Mitchell) Sholl; his daughter Elizabeth L. Sholl (Bob); his sons Howard G. Sholl, III, John K. Sholl (Zarina), and Robert M.S. Sholl; his two grandsons; and his niece Lindsay N. Sholl. In addition to his parents, Howard was predeceased by his younger brother Steven R. Sholl.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806 on Tuesday December 31, 2024, from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Funeral services will begin at 11:30 AM. A private interment will follow later in Trenton, North Carolina.

I succeeded Howard in the role of NCCo Deputy Director of Elections in 2021. I was grateful that he took time to meet with me and give me some much-appreciated advice and insights on the job. We discovered we had a mutual interest in American foreign policy and often exchanged online articles we thought the other would find interesting. I'm very glad I got to know him. I'll miss him.

I remember Howard from my very first meeting with the First State Hokies. At the time, I was about to be a new student at Tech. Through the years, it was a privilege to see him and spend time with him at DE Hokie Events. He will be greatly missed.
