Karen Elaine Stuart of San Angelo, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2025.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 21, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Shaffer Funeral Home in Grape Creek. A funeral service to celebrate her life will take place on Sunday, June 22, at 2 p.m. at Shaffer Funeral Home in Grape Creek, followed by a meal at Grape Creek Baptist Church.
Born on June 30, 1953, to David and Paro Lee (Allard) Baker in San Angelo, Karen brought light and joy to those around her from the very beginning. She attended Lake View High School, where her talent as an exceptional basketball player made her a standout both on and off the court. After graduating, Karen embraced a new chapter of her life as a devoted mother, welcoming her daughter Angela Helms in 1970 and her son Richard Brooks in 1976.
In 1999, Karen married the love of her life, John Stuart II, on February 20. Their story began at a picnic in San Angelo State Park, becoming a love that was the purest embodiment of devotion, selflessness, and unwavering commitment. Karen retired from the San Angelo State School after years of dedicated service. Upon John's retirement, they returned to San Angelo to be closer to family.
Karen was a beloved mother, proud grandmother, great-grandmother, and loyal friend whose love knew no bounds. She found joy in gardening, crocheting, reading, and was happiest when surrounded by her family. Her ability to gather loved ones brought moments of laughter and happiness that will be treasured forever. Playing the piano and organ at Grape Creek Baptist Church was a heartfelt contribution to her community, a testament to her faith and talent.
Karen's favorite moments were those spent FaceTiming her great-grandbabies, Blakelee and Charlee, whose smiles and squeals brought her immense joy. She was beyond excited anticipating the birth of her newest grandson, Reece. Shortly after Karen's passing, her family welcomed baby Reece into the world. This bittersweet timing has brought the family comfort in the belief that Karen, with her limitless love, had the honor of meeting him first in a way only she could.
Karen is preceded in death and reunited with her husband John Stuart II; brother Weldon Baker; parents, David and Paro Lee Baker; sister-in-law Rosemary Baker; and dogs, Jack and Chloe.
Remaining to cherish her memory are her brother, Wayne Baker; her children, Angela and husband Mike Helms and Ricky and wife Christina Brooks; grandchildren, Whitney and husband Cody Weidner, Hunter Howell, Julia Middleton, and Natalee Brooks; great-grandchildren Sterlyn, Makynzi, Blakelee, and Charlee Weidner; many cherished nieces and nephews, and her best friend, Janice Weddell.
