Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Beverly on Jul. 30, 2022.
Mary (Wishard) McDougall, 85, of Hamilton died on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Born in Anderson Indiana to the late Frederick B. and Ruth (Clawson) Wishard, Mary attended Anderson High School before going on to study at Earlham College. She later received a Master of Library Science from Rutgers University, an MA from Montclair State University and was a PhD candidate at Ohio State University. While studying at Edinburgh University, she met her late husband, Alexander McDougall to whom she was married for 51 years.
Mary was an intrepid traveler, opera fan and bibliophile. She spent her career working as an editor, librarian and teacher with particular expertise as a children's and reference librarian. In 1994, Mary returned to her beloved Midwest, living in the Columbus Ohio area to work and study at Ohio State University until she retired.
A formidable and wide-ranging intellect, Mary wrote extensively about the works of Coleridge and the life of 19th century Presbyterian missionaries in the Middle East. She was often asked by academic friends and colleagues to edit their work because of her keen observations. She was a great conversationalist with a wonderfully dry sense of humor. The past eleven years, she lived with her daughter Ruth and her family in Hamilton, MA. A lifelong Presbyterian, Mary worshipped at the First Church Wenham where she was able to enjoy her appreciation for fine music.
Mary is survived by her son Martin McDougall and his wife Desiree of London, England; daughter Ruth Collins and her husband Brendan of Hamilton; five grandchildren Katherine, Fiona, Maggie, Annabel, Aksel; and one great grandchild Claire.
Mary is predeceased by her sisters Martha Kurland, Florence Clair, and Alice Rowan.
Funeral services for Mary will be held at First Congregational Church in Wenham. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary's name to
Doctors Without Borders or the World Wildlife Fund. Arrangements by Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly. Information, directions, condolences can be found at www.campbellfuneral.com
