Reverend Paul James Murphrey, 96, of Midland went home to glory on December 17th, 2023. Son of the late Hubert and Inga (Petersen) Murphrey, he was born in Redford Township, Michigan on August 23, 1927. A significant day in his life was March 12, 1944, when he accepted the Lord as His personal Savior. Paul married the love of his life Amy Church on August 15, 1949, and they shared 74 loving years together.
Paul graduated from Redford Union High School in 1945 and joined The United States Coast Guard during WWII. After his service he went into the ministry and attended Detroit Bible College, graduating in 1949. Paul spent 60 years of his life as a Pastor at various churches and received an honorary doctorate from Faithway Baptist College. Even after retiring from full time ministry, he continued conducting services in nursing homes and senior housing and made many visits to shut-in folks and patients in hospitals.
Paul lived an active lifestyle and loved watching and playing sports. He enjoyed fishing and playing softball and was still golfing at 92 years old. He also designed and built many model airplanes. Paul was a talented singer and even made his own CDs that he shared with others. He enjoyed telling entertaining stories and corny jokes to family and friends.
Paul is survived by his wife Amy (Church) Murphrey and 4 daughters: Lettie (Bill) Gray, Deborah Ellen, Rebecca (Jeff) Griffith, and Jan (Mark) Pickering, along with 9 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Paul was predeceased by his parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, December, 23rd, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Dan Dickerson officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00am until the time of the service at the church. He will be laid to rest at Midland City Cemetery in Midland, MI.
In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Calvary Baptist Church in his honor.

My fondest memories were in choir. We would joke that he sounded just like Jimminy Cricket. Without missing a beat he would start singing, "when you wish upon a star...". He was awesome! And it always amazed me as a teen that he had memorized the Bible. The whole thing. He was one of the humblest men I have ever known.

What a wonderful Pastor, caring, kind and compassionate. I loved listening to him sing and awed at his scripture and passage memorization. I have had the great pleasure of knowing him since childhood, faithful in his prayers for myself and family. He baptized me at a young age, I remember that well!

Pastor was a true friend, I really appreciated his mentoring me in doing home visitations. He wrote out a whole series of Bible verses to use in various situations that I still carry and use.

Godly man and incredible preacher. Friend to all. Much better golfer then me. I will always cherish the memories I have spending time with him golfing. I grew in my faith under him and I was baptized by him at Columbus Baptist Church. I have a changed life because his ministry. Thank Pastor for being faithful to Christ. I know I will see you again at the feet of Jesus!
