Peter J. Fischbach of Cresskill, Hillsdale and North Bergen NJ passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Friday December 6, 2024 at the age of 88 years.
Peter was born on December 27, 1935 in North Bergen, New Jersey to Carl and Sophie Fischbach. He grew up in North Bergen and attended Emerson High School in Union City. Upon his graduation he entered the Army where he was stationed in Hawaii as a Specialist Second Class Officer as an expert typist. After leaving the Army Peter attended Jersey City State College receiving his Bachelors in Teaching and Education. He began teaching in the North Bergen School district as a Physics teacher in 1961. He furthered his education at Montclair State University receiving his Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision, then attended Fordham University working toward his doctorate degree. Peter held many positions in the North Bergen School System. Teacher, Union Rep, Vice Principal, Assistant Superintendent, then rose to Superintendent of Schools retiring after almost 50 years in the school system. At North Bergen Peter was known for his smart, fair views of how the school system should work. He valued hard work and loved educating the students of North Bergen. He also held his staff in high regard. He touched and helped the lives of countless students, faculty and families with his devotion to his profession.
Peter loved watching sports, and Absolut was his beverage of choice. He was a "jack of all trade", he loved to work with his hands, build anything, crossword puzzles, golfing, cooking and could even braid hair! He hosted epic parties, loved attending parties, going out to eat with friends and family and vacationing in Hilton Head SC.
His greatest treasures in life are these. His beloved Karen. Their true, deep and complete connection was amazing for us to see. A full love story at all times. They married "officially" on June 1, 1996 and never left each other's side even for the little things. Next are his beautiful granddaughters, Caitlyn Higgins and Samantha Higgins. To say he spoke about them often would be an understatement. They made him the happiest person on earth, spoiling them at every chance was his full time passion.
Peter is predeceased by Karen Magnus-Fischbach, spouse of 28 years, and soulmate of almost 50 years, survived by his granddaughters Caitlyn Higgins and Samantha Higgins, daughters Nancy Higgins and Karen Fischbach and favorite son in law Michael Higgins and daughter in law Dana Cartin. His brothers Gary Fischbach, Sister in law T erri Fischbach and Albert Fischbach. He is predeceased by his 6 other siblings. There are also many nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends.

I´m a former grad of NBHS class of 1968 , and was a faculty member & taught at NBHS for 40 years before retiring . I enjoyed being in Mr. Fischbach´s physics class when I was a student . When Mr. Fischbach was Supt. Of Schools , he & Mr. Gattoni allowed my wife & I to go to Romania in May,1991 to adopt a baby boy from a Romanian orphanage in Europe . . Mr. Fischbach was very sympathetic, understanding & generous in letting us go there . A year later we adopted , we were blessed & had a natural son too ! You always supported my Russian & German program when I taught at NBHs too ! I always told all my students about you and our adopting a baby from Romania. The adoption program soon shut down after we adopted . There were no second chances !!We & my entire family are eternally grateful to you , Mr. Fischbach !!!God bless you and I will always remember & pray for you ! Mr. Robert Komar- retired Russian/German teacher NBHS

I want to offer my deepest condolences to the family with one more little memory of Mr. Fischbach. After I received my Master´s degree in Bilingual/ESL education I went on to get my Counseling and later my supervisory certification, always thinking unwanted to get out of the classroom. Annopeningnformandepwrtment Chair opened up and I applied for the position. Mr. Peter Fischbach called me for an interview. I was very excited. He proceeded to interview me with certain questions, and halfway through I realized that I was not fit for the job. He knew that, but he wanted me to become aware of it on my own by guiding me toward that realization. I have never forgotten that and in continued my teaching career very happily in the classroom until my retirement. May he test in peace.

I first met Peter, Mr. Fischback in 1977 when I started working as a bilingual/ESL teacher when he was in Horace Mann school. As the program got established I continued as a bilingual social Studies teacher in North Bergen. Sadly, my husband passed suddenly at age 50. I was devastated and distraught. Mr. Fischback was by then Superintendent of NB. He showed kindness, empathy, & compassion by letting me take a two month leave, finally suggesting I should try to come back to work, which was the best thing to do. L Gazic
