Stephen Michael "Steve" Helfrich, 87, of Evansville, passed away Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital. He was born October 4, 1937 in Evansville to the late Anna Mary "Scottie" (Scott) and Adam Charles "Bus" Helfrich.
Steve was a graduate of Mater Dei High School and the University of Evansville, formerly known as Evansville College. He served in the Indiana National Guard. Steve was the owner and operator of Helfrich Vending from 1955 until his retirement in 1998. He was a lifetime member of St. Boniface Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic minister and on the Parish Council. Steve was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast who especially enjoyed following the sports teams at the University of Evansville. He had a standing poker game with his school classmates for over 60 years.
Steve is survived by his wife, Barbara (Bennett) Helfrich; daughter, Claire Helfrich; sons, Patrick (Susan) Helfrich, Stuart (Rachel) Helfrich, Joseph (Jill) Helfrich and Wesley (Lori) Helfrich; grandchildren, Adam (Jennifer) Helfrich, Max Helfrich, Jackson Helfrich, Henry Helfrich, William Helfrich, Leanne Helfrich, Jacob Helfrich and Nico Barker; great-grandchildren, Alison and Lauren Helfrich; and sister, Julia Bently.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara "Babs" Wolf.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2025 at Ziemer Funeral Home Central Chapel, 626 N. First Ave., Evansville with a Memorial service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 418 N. Wabash Ave., Evansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Father Christopher Droste officiating.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Boniface Parish-St. Boniface Church, 1626 Glendale Avenue, Evansville, IN 47712.
