Stephen "Steve" Thompson, a devoted family man and veteran, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 5, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children. He was 84 years old.
Steve was born on July 21, 1941 at the Thompson Farm on County Route 1 in Addison, New York. Steve was one of 13 children raised on the family dairy farm. He was the child of Duane and Jane (Troy) Thompson. In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his son Joseph, brothers Dave, Jim, Fred, Phil, Joe and sisters Winifred, Helen, and Kathleen. He is survived by brothers Dan, John and sisters Mary Jane and Patricia along with many nieces and nephews.
Steve graduated from Addison High School in 1960 and went to work on his father's farm. Shortly after he was drafted in the US Army. Once returning from the Army he married Anita Risely in 1965 at St. Mary's Catholic church in Storm Lake, Iowa. The two began their married life in California, but when Steve's father prepared to retire from the dairy business, Steve answered the call to return to the farm. Alongside two of his brothers, Steve ran the Thompson family dairy farm for over 20 years, continuing a family tradition of dedication to the land and community.
Eventually transitioning from agriculture, Steve began a new chapter of service, spending 23 years as the Highway Superintendent for the Town of Addison.
Steve had a lifelong passion for riding horses. From a young age, he was around them-handling, caring for, and working alongside them. Some of his fondest memories were of helping his dad on the family farm, working the land with horses long before they ever owned a tractor. Those early years instilled in him not just skill, but a deep respect for horses. Even after life took him down other paths, that bond never faded. When he retired, Steve rekindled his love of horses, spending his days training horses-not just for himself, but for his children and grandchildren. It brought him joy to pass on that tradition, watching a new generation share in the same passion that had shaped his own life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Anita, children; Jack (Sheila) Thompson, Eileen (Clint) Crooker, David (Melissa) Thompson, Patrick (Stephanie) Thompson, Stephen (Kim) Thompson, Cynthia (Tim) Lyons, Colleen (Dave) Webb, Ronald (Bernice) Thompson, Frederick (Mickey) Thompson, Jane (Phillip) Greene, Yvonne (Steve) Strauss, Anne (Josh) Bezio, Mike (Laura) Thompson, Kathleen (Kacee) Love, and 74 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His presence, his wisdom, and his unwavering dedication to his family will be greatly missed.
Steve gave up much throughout his life to provide for his large and growing family. He worked hard, made sacrifices without hesitation, and always put his loved ones first. His life was a living example of dedication, humility, and unconditional love. His family and friends take comfort in knowing that he is now walking in heaven, made whole with a new body, by the side of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His faith was steadfast, and we rejoice in the peace he has found. We all deeply miss him.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Flint Funeral Home, 10 Wall Street, Addison, NY 14801. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 51 Maple Street, Addison. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery.
