My first memory of Uncle Tom is at Grandma Gallenstein's on Waldorf during a typical dinner feast and hearing his infectious laughter. I was probably 5 or 6 when we made one of our annual trips from New England to Ohio.
We started to get much closer a few years later as my brother and I would spend many hours with Grandpa Gallenstein which included our always-happy Uncle Tom. Uncle Tom didn't much care for the firearms and ammo reloading the way Brad and I did but if there was any construction to do (which there always was) we knew it would involve Grandpa and Uncle Tom.
Uncle Tom was always patient with teaching us the proper way to use tools, especially hammers. I can still hear his laughing at us when it took us 8-10 taps to pound in a single roofing nail. He typically did it in 1 or 2 whacks. That even gained a grin from Grandpa.
Of course, the best part of 'helping' on all the construction projects was to take a collective break and let the 'girls' know that we had to go the rope store to pick up some rope. A not-so-secret message that we were really going to the local Dairy Whip for a big vanilla cone!
Other memorable times were riding along to the harness races. We got to travel in the cab or the bed of the pickup pulling a horse. Once at the track we got to spend special 'alone' time to share a joke or get reinforcement of the importance of honesty and working hard. Always with that special laugh!
I know I'm a better man for having had Uncle Tom in my life. My heart knows better than words can say. Love you Tom! Give Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt Shirley and Hank a hug from me.
