Obituary
Dr. William H. Barrett, Jr., affectionately known as Bill, passed away peacefully in his Ellicott City home on September 22, 2023, following a valiant struggle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Born on October 9, 1949, in Baltimore, MD, Bill's life and career embodied service, integrity, and commitment to his family and community. His generosity, adventurous spirit, and intelligence will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Bill's academic and career accomplishments were profound. He was a proud graduate of Archbishop Curley High School before going on to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMBC). He then advanced through the University of Maryland School of Dentisty where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. His dedication to service led him to join the U.S Navy, where he served as a full lieutenant at Camp LeJeune, NC in 1977.
Returning to Maryland, Bill owned and operated his own dental practice in Ellicott City for nearly four decades, providing excellent dental care to countless local families. Furthermore, he generously donated his time and expertise as a volunteer with Dean's Faculty at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry for 15 years, and carried his spirit overseas, volunteering with Operation Smile in Vietnam, providing dental care to children in field clinics.
His interests varied greatly, reflecting his adventurous and engaging personality. Music was one such passion. He loved sitting at the keys of his piano, allowing its harmonies to fill his home. He frequently sought the sky as an adept pilot and was proud of his Cardinal 177 Cessna. No destination was too far for Bill. His travels led him to the shores of numerous countries, including Ireland, Italy, Vietnam and Thailand, to mention a few. As a steadfast Baltimore Ravens season ticket holder, he attended games for many years. Bill's curiosity led him to collecting coins and most recently acquiring his private investigator license.
Faith played a vital role in Bill's life as a proud member of the Church of the Resurrection. He looked forward to his weekly breakfasts at the EC Diner, a ritual that showcased his love for community and friendly conversations.
Achievements aside, it was Bill's relationships that truly defined him. He was a loving husband to Diane C. Barrett and a proud father to Matthew J. Barrett and Lauren R. Barrett, who will soon marry Kyle Kraft-Culkin. He is survived by his sisters, Jacquelynne Kirby and Suzanne Butterbaugh, and brother-in-law, Dorsey Butterbaugh, as well as Debbie and Jerry Schmidt, his sister and brother-in-law. His nieces and nephews, Heather Klausmeyer, Ashley Butterbaugh, Jaime Schmidt-Krochune, and Michael Schmidt, will carry fond memories of their cherished uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Barrett, Sr. And Jeanette K. Barrett; his brothers-in-law, Daniel Kirby and Frank Pecukonis, and his in-laws, Frank and Margaret Pecukonis. Additionally, he leaves behind many close friends with whom he traveled, shared coffee, and had long, wonderful conversations.
Dr. William H. Barrett, Jr.'s life, or "Bill" as he is fondly remembered, was filled with purpose, service, and an overarching love for his family and community. Though he will be dearly missed, his legacy will continue to inspire, as his life's work touched many and left indelible memories in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

I have known Diane and Bill for 47 years. Bill always made me laugh. He had a treasure chest full of jokes! A kind and generous human who made the world a better place. Our hearts are sad for Diane, Lauren, Matthew and the entire family at this time. May Bill's handprint be on the hearts of everyone he touched. We will be planting a tree in a forest in need in his honor. Love, Roz & Bill Altman

Bill was my dentist the entire time he practiced in Ellicott City. Over the years we became friends, and I always looked forward to my appointments because he would entertain me with his jokes and stories, making me laugh even with all the instruments in my mouth! He was a fabulous dentist and my smile is evidence of his amazing skill. Bill was generous to a fault and I greatly admired him for his many contributions wherever he went. After he retired we had lunch together occasionally, keeping one another up-to-date on our lives. He loved his family, and Diane and his children were the center of his life.

I will miss him very much but I know he is dwelling in the house of the Lord where all his beautiful work on earth will be rewarded. My sincere sympathy and prayers go out to Diane and his family.
