The family of William Francis Mackey, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia is saddened to announce his sudden passing on May 11, 2025 at the age of 57 years.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 32 years Mindy; children Carly Anne, William Francis, Patrick Ernest, and Timothy Lyons Mackey; brothers David Mackey and Andrew (Anne) White; sisters Kirsten (Ryan) Dowdy and January (Jeff) Britt; parents William Mackey and Christine (Jim) White; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He will also be dearly missed by his work family at Kimley-Horn & Associates, neighbors, and friends on and off the athletic fields.
Bill was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 21, 1967. He grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science, and attended University of Tennessee, where he discovered yet another passion in UT Sports (Go Vols!). A civil engineer, project manager, and Senior Vice President, Bill thrived in his professional life. His loyalty and commitment also extended to his proud service in the Virginia Army National Guard.
As a father, Bill was a supportive and loving dad. He made time to be involved in all four of his children's various interests. He often gave weeks at a time to travel and support their artistic, athletic, and academic endeavors. He was always "all-in," no matter the commitment. He lived vicariously through his kids, but also allowed them the autonomy to learn and grow independently. He loved to show up for Carly, William, Patrick, and Timothy and was equally passionate about their goals and successes.
A dedicated and adored husband and father, Bill was known for his enthusiasm, sense of adventure, can-do attitude, work ethic, humor, and zest for life. Bill lived LARGE. He soaked in life and all its possibilities, and always provided his family incredible opportunities to adventure with him. He found joy in mundanity - turning "boring" moments into fun and laughter. Poignantly, he passed while preparing for his next big adventure. Bill has left a legacy of joy for all who knew him.
Welcome Home, Bill.
A funeral service will be held Saturday May 31 at 11:00 AM at Church of the Holy Family, 1279 N Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The family will welcome you to the Mackey home following church services. If you would like to honor Bill's joy for life, please consider wearing your favorite celebration colors.
The family asks that memorial contributions be sent to a charity of your choosing.

It seems just like yesterday that you played "Kick the can" with the "gang"´on Teresa Ann CT. We watched you grow into a spirited young man and a loving husband and proud father and now you have left us. But you will live on in our memory and will always be in our hearts. Rest in peace!

I'm deeply saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Bill. It was such a shock, and it's hard to find the right words. I had the privilege of working with him, and I´ll always remember his kindness, dedication, and the positive energy he brought to the team. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. May they be surrounded by love and find solace in cherished memories.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to coach baseball with Bill for a few years. I even got to coach with his son, Will and coach his son, Tim. It always brought me great joy to be around his boys. He taught me a lot about dedication and commitment to who you want to be on and off the field and I am forever thankful for that. Though it pains me to write this, I am glad that I was able to know him for the time we had together. He always had a great smile and gave genuine advice to anybody around him. His kindness and patience went a long way with others. Sending my prayers and healing to his family and friends.

Praying for the loved ones and for everyone that was so lucky to meet this man!
Coach you were the man who made me love the sport of baseball again and taught me so much! I didn´t realize it until I grew older but the things you coached me on weren´t only for baseball it was also wisdom that you have learned through your life. I am forever thankful for having your support through baseball and life and for allowing baseball to be the fun sport it should´ve been!
You will forever be missed
