Cdr. William Logan Prutzman, USNR (Ret.), Age 92, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024 at his home in Annandale, Virginia to be with our Lord. Bill was born on September 18, 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Willam O. and Rosalie M. (Verbilla) Prutzman. He was raised in Burkes County, Pa. Bill graduated from St. Joseph's University, where he was a member of the U,S. Air Force ROTC, the U.S. Marine Corps ROTC, and finally the U.S. Navy ROTC. He received his MBA from Northeastern University and successfully completed a program for Management Development at the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University while in the U.S. Navy.
Bill is survived by his children: Bernadette M. Lopez (Florentin Lopez – husband), William D. Prutzman, Susan M. Langley (Michael Langley – husband) and Nancy A Paonessa (Thomas Paonessa – husband), and grandchildren; Joshua K Langrill, Rachael A Langrill, Abigail J Lopez, Mikaela R Langley, Thomas W Paonessa and Christopher R Paonessa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary B Prutzman (Lyons), his youngest son, John J Prutzman and his wife Deborah Prutzman.
Cdr. Prutzman attended and graduated the Navy Supply Corps School in 1958 and retired after a 20 + year career as a Supply Officer. His first deployment was aboard the USS Donner (LSD-20) – after it was recommissioned during the Korean War – for several cruises to the waters off Greenland for replenishment and cold weather operations. His next duty station was the Naval Air Station (NAS) Bermuda, where he served as the base Supply Officer and earned the expert rifle and pistol medals with Naval Air Detachment Station, serviced as the Traffic Court Judge, and was in charge of Brigg Facilities, NAS, Bermuda. Bill was transferred to Boston Naval Station in the early 60's where he served as the Chief of the New England Region, Defense Logistics Agency. Bill later served aboard the USS Little Rock (CG-4), a guided missile cruiser and the flag ship of the 6th Fleet during the Vietnam conflict, home ported out of Gaeta, Italy as the Fleet Supply Officer. Bill was the first Dean for the Program Afloat for College Education (PACE) during this deployment. Bill's final duty station was the Pentagon, Joint Chiefs of Staff, in Washington DC as a Senior Staff Officer in the War Room during the end of the Vietnam conflict. He retired as a Commander in 1975. His post Navy career as a "Beltway Bandit" involved work as an Integrated Logistics Support contractor for a number of U.S. Naval Consulting company's supporting various submarine development and construction programs.
Bill was an avid outdoors-man enjoying hunting and fishing all his life. Bill was responsible for the creation of and worked closely with the Conservation Volunteer Program (CVP), Marine Corps Base (MCB), Quantico Virginia. MCB CVP members performed outdoor conservation projects improving habitat and wildlife resources. Spanning over 30 years, Bill saved taxpayers millions of dollars with donated work and materiel.
Bill was a Master Hunter Education Instructor for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) and served in the position for over 26 years. Bill taught firearms safety and hunter education and ethics to over 4,000 students and was recognized on three occasions by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) for outstanding contributions to the State's hunter education program. Bill received the prestigious Morgan Hunter Education Award for outstanding service to the State.
Bill also supported the Quantico Injured Military Sportsmen Association (QIMSA), Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico, an organization that provided outdoor experiences for wounded veterans from all services. Bill obtained cash and product donations for numerous outings for purple heart recipients, Hunting/fishing guides, Game wardens, and Support staff averaging 40 persons per numerous spring, summer, fall and winter events for over 30 years.
