Nancy Learned Obituary

YORK Nancy Reigart Learned, 74, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 11, 2014. Nancy was the daughter of the late Dr. Paul M. Reigart and Mary G. Reigart of York. She was the loving mother of daughter, Nicole and son-in-law Adrian; and son, Samuel and daughter-in-law Amy; and grandmother to Samuel's children, Abigail and Liam. Nancy is also survived by her sister, Paula and her children Donald with wife Barbara and their 3 children, and Cynthia with husband Craig and their 3 children. Nancy is also survived by many dear friends and her loving companion, Dean Dougherty and his children, Sabina and her two children and Joel, with his wife Irene and their three children. Nancy was a 1957 graduate of William Penn High School and went on to graduate from Elmira College. After spending a year abroad in France, she began her teaching career at Spring Grove High School and later at York Suburban High School. Nancy took a sabbatical to raise her two children and later returned to teach French and Spanish at York Catholic High School for many years before retiring. Growing up, Nancy was always active, dance being her first passion. She studied with the Martha Graham Studio. In her adult years, she took aerobic and kick boxing classes and even tested and obtained a White Belt in Tai Chi in her late 60s! Throughout her life, her summers were enjoyed at a cottage nestled on the banks of the Susquehanna River, along with her family and friends, enjoying swimming, boating, cook-outs, card playing, story-telling, laughing and smiling. Nancy enjoyed life and will be greatly missed and very dearly remembered. Nancy was a lifelong member of the congregation at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. She was active in Bible Study and enjoyed socializing with fellow church members. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 205 W. Main St., Dallastown, PA 17313, with the Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Rodkey, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 205 W. Main St., Dallastown, PA 17313. Madame Learned was my high school French teacher at York Catholic. She was unfailingly patient with our boisterous class and was ready with an understanding smile, even when we butchered the French language. I appreciated her support of the French club's wacky ideas for meetings and willingness to again review the subjonctif tense when it eluded us.

Madame, vous me manquez.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Madame Learned. I have not seen her in 44 years, but I remember her vividly. As a 1970 graduate of York Suburban High School, she was my French teacher in 11th and 12th grade!! Madame Learned was elegant and refined, and insisted that we speak French from the moment we stepped in her classroom until we went out the door. Our class even went on a field trip to Towson University to see a play entirely spoken in French and we also had to speak the language the entire evening. We might have rolled our eyes, but knew in our hearts, she had high expectations for us. Always treating us with dignity and respect, Madame Learned was an excellent teacher whom I've never forgotten. It sounds as though she lived a marvelous life, touching the lives of many after those early years at York Suburban. May you find comfort in the wonderful memories..............

Although, as a German student, I never had Mrs. Learned as a teacher, I remember her fondly from my years as a York Suburban student in the 1970s. She was always helpful with a good word for everyone. My sympathy and condolences to those she has left behind.

Nancy was like a second mom to me. I will miss her kind loving heart, the wonderful stories she told of her time abroad and the friends she made along the way. I'll always remember her speaking spanish to my son when he was taking spanish in school. You couldn't ask for anyone with a bigger heart. And I will really miss her. Praying for comfort for Nicole, Sam, Paula, all those who loved her and for my father.
