Bernie was born in Quincy, MA to Bernard Augustine Smith and Dorothy Frances Smith. He grew up in Weymouth, MA. After graduating from Weymouth High School in 1960, Bernie went on to earn a degree in business management from Burdett College in Boston, MA.
He then served in the United States Air Force from 1962-1966. He retired from Appleton Papers after a distinguished career in sales management. He made great use of his retirement by serving on the Planning Board for the town of East Bridgewater, and as a member of the board for the Salvation Army.
He had a pilot license and was a crew member on the wooden boat rowing team for Hull Lifesaving Museum and the Saquish Rowing Club. In his retirement he also worked as a launch operator and enjoyed his time on the ocean. He loved biking and riding his motor scooter around town. He was an avid reader and shared that passion with his grandchildren. He was a lifelong learner and in this last year he was introduced into beekeeping!
Bernie is predeceased by his parents Bernard and Dorothy Smith, his son Joseph Smith, and his brother Dr. Daniel Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy of East Bridgewater, his brother James Smith and his wife Joan of Abington, his sister Kathleen Walsh of Abington, and sister-in-law Teresa Doyle-Smith of Hanson. His son Matthew Smith and wife Kristine of Raynham, Stepson Richard Lynch and his wife Kerry of Belchertown, and stepdaughter Christine Gronlund and her husband Kurt of Berkley. He had a wonderful group of grandchildren, Joshua, Tyler, Riley, Preston, Katrina, Leo and Lucy, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
All are cordially invited to a visitation period on Friday December 22 from 10am to 11am at the Chapman Funerals and Cremations, 35 Spring St. East Bridgewater. A funeral home service will begin at 11am. Burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Veterans Administration of Boston.
