Carmina Yolanda Nettles-Hurst, 91, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2025.
She was a member of Quinn Chapel AME Church, Aurora Chapter #96, Order of Eastern Star, PHA, Louisville Assembly, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
She graduated from Central High School Class of 1951, attended Indiana University, S. East Center Wilberforce University. She graduated from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio Magna Cum Laude with B.S. in Elementary Ed. Further studies through Wright State University, Bellarmine University, Western KY University. She received her M.S. from U of L in Early Childhood Education.
She was a retired Elementary School teacher from JCPS and she retired from U. S. Census Bureau.
Carmina was preceded in death by her parents, Ina Patti Nettles and John D. Nettles Sr.; brothers, John D. Nettles Jr., David Nettles, Kenneth Nettles and her husband, Don M. Hurst.
She is surived by her daughters, Donene Y. Hurst, Schan D. Hurst-Smith, Cecile Y. Hurst-Jackson (Kevin), Treva E. Hurst and son, Don M. Hurst II (Peggy); sister, Joanna N. Smith (Walter); 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Visitation: 5pm-8pm Friday, June 6, 2025 at Quinn Chapel AME Church, 1901 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. Funeral: 11:00am Saturday, June 7, 2025 at the church, burial in Calvary Cemetery.
Arrangements entrusted to A. D. Porter & Sons Funeral Home, 1300 W. Chestnut St.
