Gene Earick Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Snyder Funeral Homes, Lexington Avenue Chapel on May 9, 2025.
MANSFIELD: Eugene P Earick passed away on May 6, 2025 peacefully at Ohio Health Mansfield after a four year battle with cancer.
Eugene was preceded in death by his wife Polly Harbaugh Earick, his father Eugene W. Earick, his mother Evelyn P. Earick and his Grandson Lucian Earick.
He is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Josh) Taylor, his son Rodney (Kimberly) Earick and grandchildren Carter Earick, Owen Taylor, Brody Earick, Nathan Taylor, Polly Taylor and Lola Earick.
Eugene was born March 2, 1947 in Mansfield. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High school in 1965 and attended Wittenberg University (1969) where he met his loving wife Polly. He was a Beta Theta Pi, and lettered in tennis. After college they moved to Mansfield, Ohio, where Gene worked as a Math teacher at Appleseed Middle School and began his lifelong love of coaching football, track, and basketball. Gene later joined his father's insurance agency Earick-Wolf Insurance Agency and merged to form what is now Roby-Foster-Miller-Earick Insurance.
Even though Gene was no longer teaching it didn't stop his passion for education. Gene was actively involved in the Mansfield City Schools Consolidation Project as a board member and site committee chairman. He also served as chairman of the Arlin Field Restoration Project, which remained a lifelong passion of his.
Gene was actively involved in the community and his Woodland neighborhood. He served as a trustee and President at The Woodland Club where he loved playing tennis, especially in the Rinky Dink tournaments. Gene was often seen cheering his kids on at swim meets with his clipboard and timer. He helped co-chair Woodland Lawn Fetes and coached his son's soccer and baseball teams. He served as co-chairman for the Fine Arts Ball at the Mansfield Art Center and the Art Auction. He also helped as an assistant tennis coach for Lexington High School when his son was playing and donated to put in new tennis courts.
Gene served on many boards and committees in Mansfield and was a quiet patron for so many organizations. He was involved in the First English Lutheran Church, Rotary Club of Mansfield, Mansfield University Club, the Rehab Center, Dayspring, The West End Neighborhood, Main Street Mansfield, The United Way of Richland County, Ohio Health Mansfield Patient Board, Richland Alternate Program, Mansfield Chamber of Commerce, IIAAO National Committee, was a past President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Ohio.
In his free time Gene was an avid sportsman. He ran two marathons, played in the Mansfield News Journal Tennis Tournament and tennis leagues. He loved to play golf at Westbrook Country club, ski at Snow Trails (and catch some sun on the deck), pickleball and attended his grandchildren's football and soccer games. He loved to travel, especially to his annual spot of almost 50 years - Siesta Key. Gene will always be remembered for his love of life, sports, family, and a passion for things he cared so strongly about.
A special thank you is expressed for the nursing staff at Primrose Retirement Community and the staff at Ohio Health Mansfield for taking such great care of him.
A memorial gathering will be held Thursday, May 22, 2025 from 3:30 pm - 7 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. Private graveside services will be held in Mansfield Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The United Way of Richland County.

Gene became a friend many years ago since we both were involved in the insurance industry and lived no more than 15 miles from each other. We extended that friendship further serving together on the Big I Ohio insurance board. Gene was always a person I could rely on if I had a difficult issue and we shared freely not as competitors but friends. Gene you were ethical and caring just to name a couple of your very positive traits. Hard to lose a friend like Gene. I pray for family in this difficult time.

I am very sorry to learn of Gene´s passing. I first got to know Gene in second grade at Brinkerhoff Elementary School. We did many sleepovers at each other´s home and always talked sports. Our friendship continued through Johnny Appleseed Junior High and Senior High.

Gene was an outgoing person, very positive, very kind, very generous, and always willing to extend himself to others and to organizations he cared about. He gave of himself freely, always had a good joke, and a laugh. He always focused on the good in others and helped his classmates to be our best. What a loss to the MHS Class of `65! Go TY-Tygers!

Please accept my condolences and know that Gene and you are in my prayers.

Love, John Hoeffler, MHS Class of 1965

My first day teaching at Johnny Appleseed Junior High, Gene came up to me and asked if I would like to help coach the football team. That started a 54 year friendship. Gene always had time to talk about sports, work and of course family. I will miss all those special times we would get together just to talk about the old times coaching, playing softball and loving life. PS: The football team that first year went undefeated!
