Leland Manning

Leland Manning, age 92, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home. He was born October 16, 1932, in Tremonton, Utah to James and Hazel Carlsen Manning. During his youth, his family moved continually throughout Washington State, Oregon, Idaho and Utah. 

After graduating from high school in Emmett, Idaho, Leland attended Boise Junior College, and enlisted in the US Navy in 1954, becoming an Airborne Radar Operator with Squadron VS-26, aboard aircraft carriers USS Valley Forge and USS Antietam.

After leaving the Navy in 1956, he attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. It was there he met Lois Telford from Vallejo, California. They were married in April 1957 in Sparks, Nevada.

Leland briefly attended the University of Utah; but his studies there in Biological Science were interrupted when he accepted a position in Mountain Home, Idaho, and then Los Angeles with Hughes Aerospace, where he was employed as the Sterilization Specialist, working with the Lunar Surveyor Spacecraft program.

They returned to Riverdale, Utah in 1963, spending the better part of the next four decades raising their four children. During this time, Leland worked in several fields and careers, spanning aerospace, civil service, manufacturing, precious metals recovery, and environmental sciences. He was intermittently employed at Hill Air Force Base.

Leland owned his own businesses, at times producing parts for both military and civilian aircraft. For decades, he owned and operated “Lee’s Spray Service,” providing fertilizer and Insecticide and pest control application.

His involvement with the community included serving as Riverdale’s Justice of Peace, and he spent many years serving as a firefighter with the local volunteer fire department. 

Never content to let his mind rest, Leland often sought out higher education and was constantly learning. He had pursued a master’s degree in toxicology from Utah State University, and he was an avid student of mining and mineralogy. For many summers, he filed and worked his own gold mining claims in central Idaho. He never stopped imagining new and innovative ways of combining technology, environmental sciences and mining.

When Lois retired from public education in 1996, they moved to Morgan, Utah, where they enjoyed the fellowship of countless friends and neighbors for many years. 

Over the years, Leland and Lois enjoyed sharing their musical talents with others, singing at countless funerals or other events, and as founding members of the Morgan Community Choir. 

Leland was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

When Lois passed away on January 23, 2021, they had been married for over 63 years.

Leland is survived by his four children, Michelle Manning, Morgan, UT; Eric (Helen) Manning, Provo, UT; Eileen Manning, Olathe, KS; and James (Charlene) Manning, Syracuse, UT. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his wife,  Lois, parents, James & Hazel, his four siblings Beverly Murphy, Lenora Charles, James Manning Jr., and Ronald Manning, and one grandchild, Daniel Pasternak.

The family wishes to extend many thanks to the staff of George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home for the attentive and outstanding care provided to Leland over the course of his time there.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2025, at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 W 5600 S, Roy, UT 84067. A public viewing will be held prior to the service at 9:30 am. 

Interment will be at the Hooper, Utah Cemetery.
