Michael Francis McGinnis, a devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, respected coach, teacher, and friend, passed away on August 9, 2025, in Aurora, Illinois, at the age of 75.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove, Illinois on Saturday, August 16 from 10 am to 2:30 pm. In following 'Big Mike's' wishes, all are encouraged to wear their favorite sports attire.
Mike was a family man above all. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy McGinnis, and their children: Michael (Stephanie) McGinnis, Jennifer (Tim) Hannon, and Cindy (Jim) Sutto. He was a proud and doting grandfather to Dylan, Dalton, Ben, Rachel, Logan, Sean, Brody, Carter, Nate, Seth, and Gloria, who brought him endless joy and pride.
Born on March 23, 1950, in Evergreen Park, Chicago, Mike lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service to others. He was the proud son of Bucko and Jean McGinnis and the second of eight brothers and a sister.. He grew up surrounded by energy and brotherly camaraderie, attending Queen of Martyrs School and Brother Rice High School before going on to Illinois Wesleyan University, where he further developed his love for education and athletics.
Mike dedicated his professional life to shaping young lives as a physical education teacher and football coach, most notably at Streator High School, where he spent the majority of his teaching career. He also shared his coaching talents at Queen of Martyrs, Aurora University, and several other schools throughout his life. A passionate mentor, Mike believed in the power of teamwork, discipline, and heart-lessons he passed on to generations of students and athletes.
Beyond the classroom and sidelines, Mike was known for his warmth, sense of humor, and unforgettable storytelling. He had a gift for connecting with people from all walks of life and a story that would leave you smiling-inspiring everyone. He cherished meaningful conversations, and his ability to make others feel seen and valued was one of his greatest qualities, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is also survived by his brothers Rick (Kathy) McGinnis, Steven (Teri) McGinnis, Kevin (Linda) McGinnis, Tom (Marsha) McGinnis, John (Katie) McGinnis, and Mark (Patty) McGinnis, and his sister Carol (Pat) Fleming. He was preceded in death by his brother Brian and his beloved parents, Bucko and Jean McGinnis.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to Special Spaces of Illinois, a non-profit charity dedicated to bedroom makeovers for children battling cancer.
