The family of Verlene May Smith with a heavy heart announce her passing on February 17, 2024 at around 2:30 p.m. in her home. She passed peacefully at home with her husband at her side. She is survived by Paul Dean Smith (husband of 56 years); her two children, Darren Paul Smith (wife, Susie), Janece Nicole Holmes (husband, Bret); her four grandchildren, Alex Standridge (significant other, Nina Richey), Makio B. Holmes, Branson Smith, and Braden Smith; with one great-grandchild, Quinn Standridge. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and one brother.
Verlene was born July 5, 1948 in Westwood California to Robert and Emma Rose Holt Timone. She graduated from Fall River High School in the spring of 1966. It was during her junior year when she met the love of her life Paul Smith. They were later married while Paul was on leave from his military duty in Burney, California on the blessed day of April 1, 1967.
Paul and Verlene spent the last few months of Paul's military service in Oklahoma before returning to Burney. For 15 years Verlene opened and owned her own beauty salon that was always full of energy and excitement with the neighborhood. During that time Verlene and Paul started their family with the birth of two amazing children Darren and later Janece. In 1985 the lumber mill where Paul worked closed. A family friend offered him a job in Utah. The family decided to move to Layton to start a new adventure together. Verlene worked at the Ogden Area Vocational Center (what is now Ogden Weber Technical College) and later the Davis Applied Technology College until she retired from the educational system in 2008.
Verlene loved to bake, garden, homemaker, travel, play cards, and spend quality time with family and friends. Verlene's faith was a large influence in her life, being a member of the Lakeside Community Assembly of God. She embodied Christianity and was always willing to help a person in need.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Cali Johnson of the University of Utah Vascular medicine for allowing us to extend our time with Verlene.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Myers Mortuary, 250 North Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah from 6-8 p.m.
