Virginia Theresa Gunn, 100, of Poughkeepsie, NY died peacefully at home on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
She was born on February 21, 1925 in Poughkeepsie, NY, the daughter of John and Adelaide Mastrovito.
Survivors include her children, Donna (Gunn) and spouse James Fischer, Edward (Gunn) and spouse Jessica, Jeanette Gunn Beaver, Michael (Gunn) and spouse Cynthia, Maureen Gunn Sears, Marie (Gunn) and spouse James Greaves, Thomas (Gunn) and spouse Helen, William (Gunn) and spouse Dina, Elisa (Gunn) and spouse Frank Merendino, Richard (Gunn) and spouse Lisa, Andrea (Gunn) and spouse Ralph Savino. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her daughters Joanne Gunn Meckelvaney, Denise Gunn Totten and son James Gunn. She was also predeceased by her siblings Josephine Norton, Helen Campbell, Gloria Veach and John Mastrovito.
After graduating from Poughkeepsie High School in 1942, Virginia was trained to be a nurse at Metropolitan Hospital, which was then located on Welfare Island in New York City. Virginia was in the United States Cadet Nurse Corp during World War II. When WWII ended, Virginia was living in NYC and was part of the celebration in Times Square on V-J Day in August of 1945. Virginia practiced nursing in NYC until she returned to Poughkeepsie to raise her family.
Virginia's love was her 14 children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Virginia loved dancing, music, gardening, cooking and baking. Her lasagna and biscotti were family favorites. Virginia had a knack for decorating and her home was warm and comfortable to everyone who visited.
Visitation is Sunday, June 29th from 12-2 PM at Timothy Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12603.
A Mass will be held on Monday, June 30th at 10 AM at Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12603. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in memory of Virginia T. Gunn.
