Linda Lee Tomes Garrett
The daughter of George Kermit Tomes and Wilma Russell Tomes, Linda Lee Tomes Garrett was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She graduated from Eastern High School in 1959 and attended Kentucky Wesleyan and the University of Louisville.
On August 12, 1961, she married Charles Edward Garrett, Jr. and with him raised two children, Wendy and Lee. While her children were young, Linda worked part time at the Kentucky Jaycees, and along with her husband Charlie was active in the St. Matthews chapter of that organization. Like her father and brother, Linda was good numbers and eventually became a successful accountant at Henderman Jessee and Company.
Linda was an active member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, attending with her granddaughter Brittany Ballinger until the latter's untimely death in 2003. Linda's faith helped her weather the subsequent decline and death of her mother in 2004 and her husband in 2010. Although Linda took joy in many things -- reading, cooking, growing flowers, and watching University of Kentucky sports -- her greatest love remained being with her family, especially her grandchildren. In 2009, Linda suffered a serious stroke; despite the limitations it left her, she remained cheerful and loving to all around her until her passing last week at Grayson Manor in Leitchfield, Kentucky.
Linda is survived by her daughter, Wendy Annette Burckhardt (Bob); and her son, Charles Lee Garrett (Leah); her grandchildren, Bud Ballinger (Shannon), Stephen Garrett, Dale Garrett, Laila Garrett, Wyatt Garrett, and Mila Garrett; her sister, Nancy Tomes (Chris Sellers); and her sister-in-law, Karen Lorson (Jim). She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Garrett, Jr.; her granddaughter, Brittany Annette Ballinger; and her brother, James Russell Tomes.
Visitation will be 10 am -1 pm on Thursday, January 5th, 2022 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd., with her service at 1vpm at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
