RICHMOND, Ind. – Helen Mae Herning, age 84, of Richmond, Indiana, died Friday, June 6, 2025, at home, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Born May 14, 1941, in Berea, Kentucky, to Harold and Pauline West Thoma, Helen moved to Richmond as a teenager. She was a 1959 graduate of Richmond High School. Helen married Larry Herning soon after graduation, and they were married 61 years until his death in September of 2020. She worked as a bank teller, a waitress, and as an office manager at a doctor's office. Helen loved taking care of her family and showed it through her love and care. She was an excellent cook, enjoyed gardening and flowers, playing cards, especially poker and euchre, and camping. Together, she and Larry were season ticket holders to Richmond High School basketball games and belonged to the Alumni Association.
Survivors include her children, Lori (James) Henry and Steven (Monica Shelton) Herning; grandchildren, Micaela (Bill) Andrews, Alexa Herning, Matthew Herning, Steven Henry, and Sarah Henry; great-grandchildren, Hayden Burton, Kylie Henry, Paisley Herning; many nieces and nephews; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry M. Herning; and two sisters, Perry Lynn Linville and Carolyn Muncy.
At the time of Larry's death, the family was unable to have a complete funeral service, so there will be a combined service for Helen and Larry. It will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Help the Animals, Inc., P.O. Box 117, Richmond, IN 47375 or Centerville Fire/Rescue P. O. Box 364, Centerville, IN 47330.
