Nancy L McAtee, a beacon of love and education, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2025, at her home in
Ellicott City, MD. Born on October 28, 1947, in Washington, IN, Nancy's vibrant spirit and unwavering dedication to her family and students left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Nancy's life was one of service and passion. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Indiana University, she continued her educational journey, achieving a Master of Science in Special Education. Her commitment to the field was evident through her tireless work with Indiana and Maryland public and private schools. Her teaching approach and advocacy for the rights and funding of her students' development earned her the affectionate title of "mom" from those she taught and mentored.
Above all, Nancy cherished her family and friends. She shared a loving marriage with her husband, James McAtee for 54 years. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Jennifer McDermott, Joseph McAtee, and Jana Corley. Nancy was a proud grandmother to Connor and Ava McDermott; Colin and Cameron McAtee; and Ellie Corley. Her role as a grandmother was one, she embraced with joy and enthusiasm.
Nancy's love extended to her sons-in-law, Steve McDermott, and Reese Corley and daughter-in-law, Stephanie McAtee, who became integral parts of her family tapestry. Her home was full of warmth and laughter, where her intelligent wit and humor were as present as her nurturing presence.
Her talents were many, but Nancy especially enjoyed playing the piano, which filled her home with music and her heart with joy. Her hands, equally skilled, tended to her beautiful garden of orchids for many years. These interests were more than hobbies; they were extensions of her love, creating an environment where her family could thrive.
Nancy's legacy is carried on by her devoted family, including her cherished children and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her loving parents, William (Mose) Mattingly and Edna (Aileen) Mattingly (nee Levron), her brother Bill Mattingly, and sister Dianna Mills. Each of these individuals played a significant role in shaping the extraordinary woman Nancy became.
Those who knew Nancy will remember her as a loving, funny, and intelligent force of nature. She approached every challenge with a smile and every triumph with humility. Her life was a testament to the power of love, the importance of education, and the value of family. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we take comfort in knowing that her spirit lives on in the lives she touched and the positive changes she fostered in the world.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Nancy was a guiding light to many, and her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those she loved and served. Her laughter, wisdom, and compassionate spirit will be deeply missed. Her influence will remain an enduring presence, guiding us through our days with the same love and dedication she exemplified throughout her remarkable life.
