Esther M. Thomas, age 84, of Lindley, New York, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Guthrie Corning Hospital after battle with cancer. She was born on September 20, 1940, in Tioga, Pennsylvania, to the late Raymond Barrett and Gertrude (Wood) Barrett. Esther attended Addison High School and married the love of her life, Elias Thomas, on May 31, 1959.
Esther worked in the Dietary Department at Corning Hospital, retiring in 1996. She was a kind and gentle soul who deeply loved her family and took pride in caring for them and her beloved cats. In her younger years, Esther enjoyed polka and square dancing. She also had a passion for knitting and crocheting. Having lived on small farms throughout her life, she had a deep appreciation for nature and cherished time spent with her family above all else.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Elias; her four children: Bruce (Chrisie) Thomas of Lindley, Brenda Kasper of Big Flats, Gregory (Ethel) Thomas of Beaver Dams, and Tom Thomas of Lawrenceville, PA; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and siblings: Raymond Barrett of Newark Valley and William Cody of Tioga, along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings Jim Barrett and Grace Horton.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney Street, Corning, NY. A graveside service will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Caton.
Esther will be remembered for her warmth, love of family, and quiet strength. She will be dearly missed.
