John Joseph Greaney passed away at his home on March 22, 2025. He was born on December 24, 1960, in China Lake, California, on the China Lake Naval Weapons Reserve.
John is survived by his loving wife of nearly 27 years, Andrea (Brenner), and their two children, Conor and Juliana. He is also survived by his siblings: Patrick W. Greaney (Abigail) of Evansville, Michael D. Greaney of Falls Church, VA, Stephen O'Brien Greaney (Jeannette) of San Diego, CA, Kelly O. Greaney of Evansville, and Mary Ellen Muensterman (Terry) of Evansville. His extended family includes his nephew Kelly J. Muensterman (Jessica) of St. Louis, MO, and great-nephews August and Arthur Muensterman of St. Louis. He is also survived by his nieces, Mary Caitlin Muensterman and Maura C. Muensterman, both of Evansville.
John's family by marriage includes his father and mother-in-law, Jerry and Jonna Brenner; brother-in-law Chris Brenner; nephew Maddox Brenner; and niece Irelynn Brenner, all of Evansville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin O. Greaney Jr., M.D., and Mildred E. Greaney, as well as his sister, Patricia A. Greaney, and brother, James M. Greaney.
John graduated from Mater Dei High School in 1979, where his basketball career was a source of pride, especially defeating Central in 1979 for a share of the City title before a packed house at Roberts Stadium. John "Ice" also earned a spot on the All-City second team and earned the Kiwanis Award that same year. John lettered in basketball, golf, and cross country, was a four- year Honors student, and earned the all-sports trophy (as did his son, Conor, in 2022). After high school, he attended and played golf at Carroll College for one year. He then transferred to Marian College, where he played golf and basketball before transferring to Loyola Marymount University. He graduated from LMU in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. During his time at LMU and following in his dad's footsteps, he joined the rugby team and was a member of the 1982 Southern California League and Division Championship team.
John enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served as a Seabee until 1993. Among his deployments, his most memorable was "wintering over" in Antarctica during Operation Deep Freeze 91-92 where he made lifelong friends.
John took great joy in supporting his nieces, nephews, and children in their athletic and extracurricular activities. Most recently, he was incredibly proud to watch his daughter, Juliana, play volleyball for Kentucky Wesleyan College.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 11:30 AM on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Rev. Bill Nicholas and Rev. Raymond Brenner officiating. Entombment will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family from 9:00 AM until the time of the service on Thursday at Corpus Christi Church, 5528 Hogue Road, Evansville, IN 47712.
Memorial contributions in John's honor can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
