"If a hug was a person, it would be Stephen."
Stephen Bryant Schwartz, born November 28, 1976, passed away on October 15, 2025, leaving this world far too soon, but not before leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Stephen grew up on the beaches of Bay City, Michigan - a place that sparked his lifelong love of the water, the outdoors, and the environment for which he was a passionate advocate. His journey through life took him across Michigan, North Carolina, and Virginia, as he pursued both education and purpose.
A proud graduate of Saginaw Valley State University, Stephen also attended John Glenn High School, Delta College, Central Michigan University, and Northwood University, where he earned a degree in business before completing his degree in elementary education at Saginaw Valley. Teaching was not just a career for Stephen - it was his calling. He was an exceptional educator who inspired, encouraged, and believed in every child who walked into his classroom. Nothing brought him more joy than hearing from former students who reached out to share how deeply he had touched their lives.
Stephen's leadership in education was equally impactful. He created the Environmental Science Program at Patrick Henry School of Arts and Science and served as a member of the Richmond, Virginia Governor's Education Council - two roles that allowed him to expand his reach and influence on thousands of young lives.
Beyond the classroom, Stephen was known for his warmth, humor, and his enormous heart. He was "Uncle Stevie" not only to his beloved niece and nephew but also to countless children of close family and friends who adored him. His love was endless, his laughter contagious, and his hugs unforgettable.
He was also a proud supporter of Michigan sports - cheering faithfully for the Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Michigan State University - often with that same optimism and enthusiasm he brought to every aspect of his life.
Stephen had a strong love for animals and shared his life with many pets over the years, each one dearly loved and well cared for. Among his favorites were Sparty and Bert, who brought him constant comfort, companionship, and joy. His gentle spirit extended to all living things, and his kindness to animals reflected the compassion he showed everyone he met.
Stephen was also an organ donor, and through the Gift of Life organization, he was able to give the ultimate gift - helping others continue to live meaningful, healthy lives. Even in passing, Stephen found a way to teach and inspire through generosity, love, and hope.
Stephen had the biggest heart we've ever known, and he cherished and loved his family and his friends more than words can say.
He is survived by his father, William (BJ) Schwartz; mother, Gail (Bryant) Schwartz; sister, Stacie (Schwartz) Santhany; niece, Taylor Santhany; nephew, Carter Santhany; uncle, Uncle Chuck Chuck (Charles) Schwartz; aunts, Kathy Schwartz and Diane Bryant; and his loving partner, Andrea Kazemier. He is also survived by many cousins, friends, colleagues, and students whose lives were brighter because of him.
Stephen was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Margaret Schwartz and Ned and Eleanor Bryant; his uncle, Uncle Skipper (Ned) Bryant; and his brother-in-law, Brian Santhany.
Stephen's family invites all who loved him to a funeral celebration in his honor on Wednesday, October 22, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the service starting at noon, at First Presbyterian Church, 805 Center Ave., Bay City, MI. We will be blessed by having Pastor Brenna A. Overland officiate.
